Part I—Too Much of a Good Thing
Times were difficult in Habersham County. The skyrocketing prices of fuel and food were threatening to bankrupt the Johnson family’s small farm, which was no match for the multi-million-dollar mega-farms that had been popping up all over the southeast. Joseph, the family patriarch, was especially troubled by the farm’s financial circumstances. He knew that this year’s corn crop was his best chance to save the farm, and his distress was evident to his family as they sat around the dinner table.
“Michael, I’m going to need your help tomorrow,” Joseph said to his eldest son. “I have to go into town to pick up a part for the combine so I can fix it before it’s time to harvest in a few months. I need you to spread the potash and phosphate on the corn because we’re expecting some rain by the end of the week.”
Michael, his mouth full of fried chicken, nodded in agreement. He wasn’t all that interested in farming, which over the years had been a point of contention between him and his father. At the moment Michael was thinking more about the time he’d be missing with his friends, but he also realized how vital this chore was to his father and the farm. “I’ll do it right after school, Dad,” he replied.
The following afternoon, Michael was loading heavy bags of fertilizer into the drop spreader on the farm tractor. His father’s cheerless demeanor the previous evening weighed heavily on him. Michael knew that 25 bags of the potassium and phosphorous-based fertilizer was the normal load to cover the 40 acres of corn the family had planted that spring. But

Driving into Mount Vernon reveals a lively downtown wonderland with family restaurants on every corner, and bars with their bright flashing beer promotions in the windows tempting every man and woman to enter and enjoy a cool beer. These bars raise farmers on pedestals of alcohol induced happiness to attempt to suppress the complications mother nature throws their way. From raging floods, to dust filled droughts farmers meticulously tend to their land and livestock with a stubborn unwillingness to allow nature to have its way. Day in and day out rugged boots plow through mud filled pastures chasing down a stubborn ewe, or repairing yet another broken fence. The farmers pride rules them and forces them to stay in their own bubble oblivious to the world outside of corn and livestock. It is this pride that restricts farmers from ever leaving the corn that has gripped them so tightly. While citizens of other towns go out, travel, enjoy a nice long break from work, farmers have to stay home and milk the cows, repair the newest broken fence, or harvest the crops. It is nearly impossible for a farmer with livestock to ever escape their home, because their home can’t survive without them.…

The essential focus of the experiment was to acquire data for the mass change resulting from osmosis in order to determine the carbohydrate solution of the carrot cells. The carrots were a vegetable used within the experiment with a carbohydrate solution around .5 M. The hypothesis is if there are carrots in different carbohydrate solutions then there will be a percent change in mass. The carrots have large vacuoles that hold water, this allows the mass to increase when the hypertonic solution is .2 M and 0 M, around .4 M the mass stays near the same because it is an isotonic solution, lastly the mass decreased when the hypotonic solution is .6 M and above. The experiment was developed with 6 plastic cups containing varying…

My aim to find out when the sugar solution’s concentration is high or low it will expand or reduce. Plant cells always have a strong cell wall surrounding them. When the take up water by osmosis they start to swell, but the cell wall stops them from bursting. When they are put in dilute solutions, plant cells turn out to be “turgid” (swollen and hard). When the pressure inside the cell increases; No more water can’t enter the cell because the internal pressure of the cell is really high.…

The purpose of this experiment was to learn more about the process of osmosis. Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane according to the concentration gradient of water across the membrane. Osmosis transports water across a membrane and the membrane limits the diffusion of solutes in the water (pg. 80).1 When we submerged the egg in vinegar, the shell dissolved because vinegar contains acetic acid, which breaks apart the solid calcium carbonate crystals that make up the eggshell into their calcium and carbonate parts. The…
