[Orals] Have the foreign players restricted the inclusion of rising Indian players in the IPL?
Far from marking the end of nationalism, the IPL is the ultimate triumph of that principle: a global tournament in which the same nation always wins.”
― Gideon Haigh

Good morning dear teachers and my dear friends. The topic that has been given to me for the ICSE English language orals is:
Have the foreign players restricted the inclusion of rising Indian players in the IPL?

All of us know that the Indian Premier League comprises eight teams. In each team, out of the eleven cricketers, four can be foreign players. According to me, yes, it is true. The foreign players have definitely restricted the inclusion of rising Indian players in the IPL. Let me explain how. If all the foreign players could be replaced by Indian players, we would have had four into eight, i.e. additional thirty-two rising Indian players. These players could have got a chance to showcase their talents in front of the whole world. This is not possible because of the policies of the IPL.

However, for the better performance of a team as well as make it more competitive, all the teams are fond of having foreign players in their teams at the cost of Indian players. The presence of these foreign players helps to increase the popularity of the IPL and its acceptance throughout the world. It also helps to justify the inclusion of the word “premier” into its name. Though there is a restriction on the budding Indian players, the popularity and the business side of the game cannot be overlooked. Therefore, we should compromise little bit in order to have some foreign players in the IPL. As a result of all these, a lot of sponsorship is gained by the IPL and a part of the money earned is shared among the rising Indian players too. However, to accommodate more number of rising players, the number of teams in the IPL can be increased, keeping in mind the foreign players at the same time.

Finally, I would like to end my speech by saying that, in my opinion, the current policies of the IPL,

As a nation of over one billion souls, I feel sorry and totally embarrassed to think that India is nowhere on the top in the world of sports and, in fact, it is somewhere on the bottom. There was a time before and after independence, my country - a country that I love, cherish and never thought of leaving to make a permanent home elsewhere in this wide planet - was for a considerable period of time a dominant force in hockey.…

If countries can be defined by their socio-cultural make-up alone it would be a difficult task to define India and its subsequent ‘Indianness’. Given its multi-cultural set-ups, where each culture and its sub-culture is a separate world of its own, it is not only presumptuous but narrow-minded to define national identity in such a manner. It cannot be based on class distinctions either. If on one hand we have the destitute scavenging for food in dust-bins, the…

Moreover the players showed sportsmanship whenever they were on the field. But today cricket has been obliterated with racism with players violating the very rules of the game. It is no longer a gentleman’s game. Few decades ago, when cricket did not have many sponsors, the only thing players did on the field was representing their country as the pride and honor of their country rested on their shoulders. Moreover, they played like true gentlemen and enjoyed every bit of it. The scenario has changed completely as cricket today has become a million dollar business. Is money, now, the sole reason why everyone wants to become cricketer is a question worth asking. Under the new IPL deal, there is a contract system for every player and each one gets a fixed amount whether he represents his country or not. The amount is really huge upto Rs. 50 lakhs for experienced players. The money is rated with the performance they show on the pitch. Moreover, every other player is approached by a company for endorsing their brands. The game has become…
