Occupational Psychology Depicted In The Wolf Of Wall Street
The movie The Wolf of Wall Street portrays a man and his love for money and power, while creating an organization to achieve his dreams. The main character, Jordan Belfort, has a dream of being rich and the way to reach that dream was becoming a stockbroker on Wall Street. Jordan makes a fortune by creating a brokerage firm. This multi-million-dollar company ultimately employed and trained many employees and became an empire on Wall street. Industrial-organizational psychology brings perspective on organizational issues that the characters in the movie go through. Industrial-organizational psychology is the study of the development and application of scientific principles within the workplace (Spector 2012). Many of the concepts that are explored in industrial-organizational psychology appear in the movie such as occupational stress, job satisfaction and job motivation.
Occupational Stress In the occupational stress process, job strains play a role in the negative reactions that an employee experiences due to different stressors (Spector 2012). Job strains can be categorized in three different reactions, such as psychological, physical and behavioral reactions. Work-family conflict is a form of conflict where the demands of work interferes with the demands of the family (Spector 2012). The demands of an organization, such as the long working hours or flexibility, causes conflict within the family. As it did in Jordyn’s case. Jordyn experienced work-family conflict with his first and second wife. With his first wife, Jordyn was constantly looking for jobs and once he began creating his own organization, it required him to work long hours and focus on expanding his work.     My conflicts are interrole conflicts. Work, school and home are all important to me. But the many roles that i have to take on can sometimes become over-whelming. These three areas of my life demand much of my attention for various reasons, so they each keep me accounted for a significant amount of obligation. Family, work and school tie into my life because one affects the other. I work to provide for my family, i go to school to increase the opportunity to provide for my family, and my family inspires me to work and go to school to provide. Although each aspect contributes to a similar goal, when I'm pulled in different directions it causes conflict because I'm forced to make decisions based on priority. My family are always first and foremost on my priority list, but decisions aren't always just that simple. Often times sacrifices are made based on how the decision will benefit everyone involved. Example: my work schedule flunctuates, therefore I miss some events that my kids participate in and currently I can't register for summer classes because I don't know my work schedule for the summer. I have to work to provide, so I try and get others that are just as important to my kids to attend their functions, and I will have to register for classes at the last minute. Other times I will try and trade work schedules with co-workers to accomadate family functions and school exams.
