Nature Vs. Nurture Influencing Child Development

One of the main arguments or discussions in psychology today is between nature and nurture influencing child development. Psychologists agree that one or both do influence child development. However, it is still a conflicting matter. Only the facts and experiences of others should influence people’s decisions on the two theories. What is Nature? Nature is the foundation to all human life. It is our genes that make us who we are from birth. Many things revolve around nature including our hair color, eye color, height, weight, and many other physical characteristics. However, in the context of human mental development a controversy occurs. The theory of nature suggests that humans are born with certain mental traits which will affect their actions
In my personal development many things conditioned me into the adult I am now. I do agree that nature has a big impact on your mental traits and your development. But I think that nature has a bigger role in detailing how a person receives certain conditions from nurture. I believe that nature’s role is one that people cannot see in themselves or other people can see in yourself. For instance, your genes might allow you to handle a tragedy in your life better than someone else. Like when my father divorced my mother and I lost contact with her I was able to handle it well based off my nature. Now nurture is a theory that is seen and shown in almost everyone’s personal development. In my personal development nurture revolved around how my father has to raise me alone and still teach me manners, and how to be a citizen in society. I know now that his job was tough but at the time I listened and learned, failed and was punished, but eventually developed into who I am today. You can also look at intelligence. Nature suggest that you are given a certain IQ level and that determines how smart you are. However, you can be nurtured into learning common sense by failure or others teaching you what not to do in certain situations. Not to mention you learn knowledge from teachers in school which is also considered nurture. I personally believe that nature is indeed a factor in everyone’s development but I also thoroughly believe that your nature can be altered by nurture therefore altering your development. This is proven because your environment is always changing and you can never know how your development as a human would turn out if you had an environment that didn’t
