Napoleon Bonaparte: A Genius Military Leader

Plan of Investigation
1. Napoleon Bonaparte was a genius military leader whose actions left a legacy in both Europe and the rest of the world.
2. The purpose of my research is to illustrate what Napoleon achieved through his leadership and how. I will explain how he gained control of France, what he did with his power, and the long lasting effects of his rule.
3. Leadership – Napoleon was enrolled in military school at a young age and began to rise through the ranks of the army rapidly. A brilliant general, Napoleon quickly gained popularity among the French citizens. He won battles against the British and Austrians, and quickly hid stories of his losses. By 1799, the French Revolution was in its third stage, and the weak Directory held power. Napoleon overthrew the Directory, eventually naming himself Emperor. One way he maintained power was through a plebiscite, or popular vote by ballot. When Napoleon gained power, he reformed France by centralizing the government, making peace with the Catholic Church, and most importantly, creating the Napoleonic code in which he incorporated many Enlightenment ideas. Napoleon ‘redrew’ the map of Europe through his military conquests. He annexed the Netherlands and Belgium, abolished the H.R.E. and united many German states. He promoted the metric system and helped emancipate the Jews of France, he oversaw the building of the Arc de Triomphe, but most importantly, he created and enforced the Napoleonic code in France and many other countries that continued using it even after regaining independence. Many concepts of the Code can still be seen in legal structures of nations today.
