Management has always been trying to make employees worth what they are paid by coming up with and putting into practise new methods in order to make them more capable and efficient. In this essay we will be discussing whether scientific management and human relations approaches still apply to organisations. The foundation of the discussion is whether the theories that were used in the past are still relevant and able to be applied in the present. There’s not much of a difference between human relations and scientific management since the outcome they want to achieve is the same, to gain the best from their employees as possible. Scientific management is when an organisation looks for ways to make the work efficient as possible for themselves, this is so that they can work at the highest level they can in order to increase what they earn. Human relations is when an organisation believes that in order to get a more positive output for employees is by treating them well, giving them a enjoyable social life at work and forming more of a positive relationship with them instead of treating them harshly or unsympathetically. It portrays the importance of many things such as group work, motivation etc.
In this essay, I will not only be going through the history and theories of scientific management and human relations but also the advantages and disadvantages of them. I will be discussing what I have found in my investigation, give examples of my own, examine the implications and also express the argument itself. I will be using Frederick Taylor (1856 to 1917), who was an engineer, for scientific management since the theory gave birth from Taylor himself. Along the way, I shall also be using theories such as Hawthorne effect, McGregor’s and others. The reason for this is because these theories are of good support towards the foundation of my essay and are relevant to the topic. I will also discuss whether these approaches
