My Obsession with the Ocean
Dalia Selman Ms. Burnmaster English 1711 January 27th Essay 1, first draft
The Ocean

I have always been driven by my human desire for beauty. I crave dramatic features that Earth offers. High mountains, deep valleys, vast oceans and bright sun. I flourish in warm temperatures and unfortunately, the Minnesota winter crushes all of my spirits. Thinking of the ocean brings me a tranquil warmth I loyally follow through the cold months. The ocean draws me in with her cool, smooth, serenity. Exploring each crevasse and fold of my sweet memories, I always search for her call. My first encounters with the sea are some of the most potent memories I possess. I am lured into the ocean by her gorgeous view, rhythmic touch and deep mystery. Imagining my childhood haven… tiffany blue skies stretch across my memory. My eyes set with the sun as cotton candy clouds lightly brush the surface of the water, looking so deliciously light and fluffy. I always remember the furthest line as the place where the stars unwind and bathe in the sea. There light illuminating all across her glaze. Skyscrapers line the beach, the big, beautiful ocean stands out against the city walls of Tel a Viv, Israel. I love the contrast of our modern busy world to Earth's timeless masterpiece. I begin to zone out, feeling I have come across my truest, most natural habitat. The silky, dirty blonde sand slips and slides under my heels. I run to the ocean shore for relief to escape the burning sensation of hot sand. I dip my toe in her shallow waters, a pleasant surprise. The water is cool with undertones of warmth, inviting me in to come and play. I begin to unravel, slowly gliding my whole body into her arms, feeling more comfortable then I had ever imagined I would be. I float across the reflection of the sky, finding peace, finding my place in the world. The breath of the ocean flows through me like a current. All my limbs rejuvenated with nourishing waters and hot sun kissing my fresh, baby

It was nearly sunset and I was relaxing along the soothing beach in Capitola, California. My brother and sister were assembling sand and shells to make a colossal sand city while my parents were in two chairs chatting. As I was ambling down the oceanfront my feet would feel the chilly waves and I could sense the gentle wind blowing my way. I was reminiscing about the exciting activities previously that day, including swimming through the waves, body surfing, and passing around a volleyball with my brother.…

Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…

She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. She floats for a long while, the salinity in the water steadily…

Schweitzer claims that the sea is a motherly realm; however, like a lover, “the voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation” (Chopin 18). Though Schweitzer and Chopin allude to the sea as possessing competing metaphorical implications, the former makes the intriguing claim that the sea possesses two internal contradictions: a voice which guides one to solitude through a language without words, and a touch which surrounds one in a gentle, loving embrace (Schweitzer…

Across from me was a handsome, dark haired man, broad-shouldered holding a Les Paul classic custom guitar playing melodious songs while I lay on a nice big red beach chair. In my hand was a big glass of iced tea shimmering in the bright sun as I took a sip it cooled the inside of my throat causing me to keep my cool temperature in the hot summer. It was the perfect day to be out, with the sun casting just the right amount of shine to give me that perfect sun-kissed tan. I was lying on a beautiful red chair with my legs sprung up in a gorgeous white cotton maxi dress. As, I got up and started to walk towards the ocean I could hear the waves up ahead. I took my shoes off and set foot on the hot, white sand. I could feel the sand going through in between my toes from every step I took. As I stroll along the edge of the beach I feel free of worries and stress, I am just enjoying the holidays, no school, or work just free time. In the middle of the ocean were many surfers in yellow shorts riding in the various color surfboards. They were going so fast doing so many tricks…

The sand looked clean like sugar spread out for miles, As it squished between our toes and made our claves ache with every step. I found it some what amusing to see the sand castles that still remained, The lucky few that made it through rambunctious little boys play. It was dark outside and stars floated in the distance, But the moon seemed so close we could grab it and take it in our pocket to keep for ourselves. Ghost crabs darted past our feet like thieves in the night, going in one hole and out another. The beach house had long vanished in the night, but neither of us even noticed. We could hear music lurking in the air coming from the boardwalk bands we had seen previously tonight. Waves crashed quietly against the shore causing slight pieces of sea shell to dwell on the damp surface of the beach. Travis and I both ran from the waves like two children playing tag on a kindergarten recess field. That game lasted a good thirty minutes, and after he splashed me with the salty sea water I decided it was time to stop. The warm air was moist and humid causing my hair to frizz like a poodle, but Travis told me I looked amazing as always. I found that hard to believe because I knew my hair swelled with every minute we were gone. We had been away for hours taking in every element of the beach, collecting sea shells and counting the stars as if we had no care in the world. It was getting late and I knew my parents would get worried if we didn’t turn around soon.…

As I walk down the narrow, brown, rickety bridge that leads to the ocean my heart begins to race in anticipation of reaching the fascinating sight. I’m suddenly surrounded by sand that is white and pure as snow. I walk at a turtle’s speed absorbing this overwhelming beauty that encircles me. The sky is the brightest blue I’ve ever seen, so bright that it almost seems as if it is from an animated movie and not real life itself. Fluffy clumps of clouds that were covering the sky before slowly fade away into thin air and the crystal clear waves sparkle like diamonds. The water is never-ending. I see heaps of seagulls flying around the sky, white and grey and full of spirit. As a gust of wind runs through my long, dark, brown hair I look to the right to see two elegant dolphins leap from the deep blue sea and dive back in as if saying hello to the gorgeous, heavenly day.…

The sun was shining, the wind flowing through the air, and the waves were crashing onto the shoreline. The seagulls were roaming around trying to search for nourishment. As I step into the Atlantic Ocean I feel the sand between my toes and the water streaming around my body. I gazed at the horizon. The only thing I could see was the luminous sun and blue sky. The brisk water proceeds up my legs and to my torso as I stroll into the water. I submerged into the water and opened my eyes. All I could see was a blue-green ray of blurriness. I appeared out of the water and flipped my sopping, wet hair back and combed my hand through it. I saw back to shore. Feeling relaxed I walked to my towel I flopped onto it and stared at the scorching sun. Closing my eyes, I lay flat on my pack and took a deep inhale. Exhaling out I heard a “thump” noise. I opened my eyes, I sand all over my body and I…

As I was floating in the ocean with my eyes closed a feeling of tranquility came over me. The sun was shining on full power of brightness with a bluest sky on the background. I felt the sun’s rays permeating the skin on my face and it was getting burnt like toast in the oven. The cold water was constantly tickling the burnt inside of my ears. The rest of my body was under the water and I felt like I was dissolving in the ocean becoming one with all around me. My face was getting hotter because it was captured by luminous monster. The waves were washing my incandescent skin like they wash out traces on the sand. I felt like the ocean knew me better than I knew myself. I couldn’t plan a more perfect, overwhelming feeling. The strong movements of the waves, floating my body with its motion like the wind catches a leaf and blowing it back and forth, made me feel so little and weak. I listened to the duet of wind and waves like a sweet lullaby being sung by a loveling mother to sooth her baby to sleep. I felt safe in Mother Nature’s arms, a peaceful timeless moment only to be enjoyed spontaneously. As I opened my eyes it was over, the moment was gone. All I could think of was how beautiful everything was around me, telling its own story.…

The sun was hid above the foggy ocean clouds at late-morning and the eerie ocean mist surrounded the boat. I glanced upon the vast deep blue ocean and heard the siren like wails of the seagulls flying overhead, following us, hoping to feast their eyes upon a fish. I was not feeling well and I had the desire to end this odyssey. As I was waited, my eyes wondered, my mind and body grew weary of the rocking boat. Back and forth it swayed, making me more seasick. Every time I woke up, after being hypnotized by the rocking boat, the running waves and the endless grey sky, my stomach forced me to barf out all my still digesting food into vast ocean. My fishing pole was cast down deep on the ocean floor and stuck to the steadfast boat, as I left it there waiting, in hope for a tug. It was written in my head, that I had still many more things to learn and new things to experience, no matter how harsh the condition may be.…

Near Point Fermin Park there is a place. It’s a place where I go to get out of my house to cool down, in a bad mood, or there to think about the positive things. When I come to this place I feel free and at ease with myself. I feel like no one can disturb me, nothing can faze me, and nothing can make me upset when I am here. When I am here I feel the nice, warm sun on my face and the breeze blowing through my hair. I smell the ocean when the breeze passes me as I sit there on the edge of the rock. When I am here I feel rebellious, blessed, and hopeful. Sitting there I hear and see beautiful things. The sounds I hear are the waves splashing on the rocks. I see the bubbles when the water is done splashing on the rocks. I keep coming here because it’s such an addictive atmosphere. As I sit there on the rock, I hear birds talking to each other, and sometimes I even hear sea lions which are funny to hear. I look up at the big blue sky and see the big cotton candy clouds they look tasty to eat. When looking up, I think about my future and what I can do for it. I think about being successful and making my parents and most importantly myself happy with my future. I love this place. This is my peaceful place.…
