ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN TANZANIA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1:0. General introduction

This chapter introduces the study on the determinants leading to the adolescent pregnancy in secondary schools in Tanzania. The first section provides a general background to the problem, statement of the problem, the purpose and specific objectives of the study. It also provides the research questions, the significance, limitations and delimitation of the study as well as the framework which guides the study.

1:1. Background to the problem

Adolescence is defined as under aged girl usually within 12-19 years old becoming pregnant. The adolescent pregnancy has been a global problem. In United States of America (USA) for example National Center for health statistics (2010) reported that, every year more than one million adolescent girls become pregnant. Over two thirds of these pregnancies are unwanted.

The case in Tanzania, adolescent pregnancy in secondary schools is a threatening issue according to the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training findings showed that more than 3000 secondary school girls are expelled annually due to pregnancy. In Kinondoni Municipality, the statistics showed the number of girls who are enrolled in secondary education. This gave a fact that pregnancy is one of the factors which caused that drop out. There are factors resulting to adolescent pregnancies these include, poor economic status of the family, separation of the parents, moral breakdown, luxury needs, separation of parents lack of parental guidance and counseling. Financial and material gain, mob psychology, living far from their home to school, adolescent with

sexual arose, some are ruled by their fellow friends of the same age group, and lack of education given to students about bad sexual
