Mindful Meditation
The reference from our introduction that we thought was closely related was by Dianna Quach, A Randomized Controlled Trial Examining the Effect of Mindfulness Meditation on Working Memory Capacity in Adolescents. This study focuses on working memory capacity, where as ours will serve the purpose of a general memory test. But the methods used is similar to that of our short study. Dianna’s study had 198 students who were recruited to take part in one of three conditions, mindfulness meditation, hatha yoga or waitlist control group (regular PE class). This study was done over four weeks (8 sessions) for 45 min sessions. The hypothesis was to see if mindful meditation would show greater improvement in working memory capacity (WMC) over the other two condition groups. The computerized test was comprised of 15 sets of trials, which required a memory task while answering math questions. There was 75 letters to recall in order and 75 math questions to solve. It was measured by recalling completely in the same order given. As for the internal validity, I would say that this study used manipulation of the independent variable and the control of extraneous variables. The students were recruited into one of three groups. Only one variable was manipulated, which was the 45 minute session twice a week. We plan on using the test-retest method. This study was over a course of four weeks, and we are doing ours over a few hours. We will be using mediation and a control group. The pre-test will happen, then the meditation/control group session followed by a post-test. To manage the internal validity of our study, we would not allow them to communicate about the study to others, especially those in the opposite group as
