may day eve
World War II started with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, December 8, 1941 then the Philippines followed on the same day. The traditional simbang gabi or misa de gallo was suspended in year 1941. President Manuel Quezon and Gen. Douglas MacArthur said that they will return when they flee because of the war. The last province surrendered to the Japanese forces is Bataan that launched the heinous Death March that killed many Filipino supporters. The government then is controlled by the Japanese milirtary and the currency is being called as Mickey Mouse money. HUKBALAHAP or Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon is a guerilla warfare that can be seen vividly in Esteban Javellana’s novel entitled Without Seeing the Dawn” that was published in US back in 1947. Filipino collaborators or MAKAPILI helped the Japanese forces here in the Philippines to give prosperity in Asia, but a lot of sufferings were being given by the war especially the Filipina comfort women that were being raped by the Japanese. A famous autobiography by Rosa Henson entitled Comfort Woman: A Slave of Destiny is a proof of those sufferings. Tagalog literature such as bodabil and kundiman flourished also during these times due to nationalism. A victorious day happened in the year 1944 when Gen. Mac Arthur landed in Leyte and won over Japan in the year 1945. The inauguration of the new Philippine republic followed in July 4, 1946. In 1950, Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards was established to give recognition to Filipino writers and their craft.

Lasting only a month in 1945, The Battle of Manila was an intense and vicious battle in which outnumbered Japanese troops were defeated by U.S. troops. The fierce battle occurred in Manila of the Philippine islands from February 3rd to March 3rd in 1945 near the end of World War II. Japanese had captured the Philippine Islands three years prior to this battle, and this was the chance American troops had to liberate the Philippines. Encirclement strategy and clear objectives are what allowed the United States to come out victorious in this battle. The Battle of Manila became known as one of the most brutal for urban warfare and was far more violent than any war following it in the Pacific region of World War II. The One Day of the Year

“The One Day of The Year” was set in Australia, in the 1960’s. It explores the universal theme of Father- Son conflict against the background of the beery haze and the heady, nostalgic sentimentality of Anzac Day. It is a play to make us question a standard institution, but it is the likeability and genuineness of the characters that give the play its memorable qualities: Alf, the nobody who becomes a somebody on this day of days; Mum, the anchor of the family; Hughie, their Son, with all the uncertainties and rebelliousness of youth; and Wacka, the Anzac, with his simple, healing wisdom.…

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who perished while serving in the military, a day to honor the soldiers who died while defending America. Our three day weekend in May is a wonderful time to get together with friends and family. To most of us, Memorial weekend it means no school/work and an extra day off. Memorial Day is so much more than a day off to have fun. Most students do not really even understand why they get school off; a lot of adult use this time for cookouts or parties. Memorial Day is a day where we, as Americans, should honor our fallen soldiers.…

Some of the Jesuits (Reducciones) strongly opposed using Guriani people as slaves. The fight for the rights of the Guriani broke out into the Guriani War (1754-1756). Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Today, many communities celebrate the observance of this holiday by organizing parades and official ceremonies that honor those that have fallen. Americans also honor soldiers by visiting cemeteries and national monuments and other memorials by placing flowers and flags on graves. Others honor the fallen by flying their flags half-staff until noon on Memorial Day. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. Memorial Day is important because it is a day we set aside to remember those who gave their all for us to live free today, it is a day to honor those men and women who died for our country, and it is a day to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.…

The movie tells the story of the first hero of the Philippines, Lapu-lapu. The movie opens with a battle scene between two armies on a beach on Mactan Island. One army is led by Lapu-lapu and the other by Humabon. The forces of Humabon are defeated and he escapes with a wound at the stomach delivered by Lapu-lapu himself. Lapu-lapu’s forces spend the night resting from their exertions during the battle. The babaylan performs rituals for the dead and offers a chicken to the spirits. Moments later, a man is hunting for food at a river. He saw a woman bathing in the nearby lake. He raped her and fortunately there is a witness. The body of the woman was discovered by the tribesmen along the seashore. The following day, the burial took place near the barangay. The people wore white garments. The body was placed on a raft along the coastline. The body was burned because they thought that the soul of the body is the smoke. They also thought that the soul of the body goes up to the sky in which they thought is the kaluwalhatian. The witness told Lapu-lapu who committed the crime. Lapu-lapu then ordered his guards to find the suspect. The suspect was detected and he was later captured. Lapu-lapu asked the father of the victim to kill the suspect, on which he did. Lapu-lapu fell deeply in love with Bulakna and proposes a marriage. The wedding started with the showering of flowers to the bride. The groom and the bride meet in a place where there is a lot of food. The babaylan performs a ritual. There were people dancing between a bonfire with candles in each of their hands. Days have passed and the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines at March 20, 1521. Ferdinand Magellan named the Philippines Isla de Lazarus. At first, Humabon is suspicious of his visitors but he soon comes up with a plan on how to use the Spaniards against his enemy, Lapu-lapu. The first Filipino to become a Christian is Kulambu. Humabon agrees to become…

Recto covers a whole range of information that is relevant for this research. However, its value is in its information that it provides about the guerrilla groups, how they were formed, and the roll that the youth played in fighting the Japanese. In order to give the reader an idea of what the guerrillas were up against and why they were so determined to fight against the Japanese, I will be referencing Captain Vicente M. Agdamag who wrote, 150 Days of Hell Japanese Invasion of the Philippines 8 Dec 1941-May 1942. His real accounts of his time in the area of study during the Japanese occupation gives a very clear picture as to the horror that was going on and why they people chose to fight against the Japanese. Being a Filipino commander it makes his work even more relevant than the work would be had it been from an American who was there during that time. Because Agdamag does such a great job describing what went on during that time he also gave great accounts of the military movements, this includes both the movements of McArthur (when he was still in the Philippines) as well as the guerrillas. This military information will prove to be vital to constructing this research paper. The final key to my research is a documentary that was created entitled, Bloody War with the Japanese Invaders - The Philippines Hell. This documentary gives a great account over everything that was going on in the area well after…

    Manuel L. Quezon

As the result of my research I found out that Manuel Luis Quezón y Molina (August 19, 1878 – August 1, 1944) served as president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944. He was the first Filipino to head a government of the Philippines. Quezón is considered by most Filipinos to have been the second president of the Philippines, after Emilio Aguinaldo (1897–1901). ). Quezon played a major role in obtaining Congress' passage in 1916 of the Jones Act, which pledged independence for the Philippines without giving a specific date when it would take effect. He fought for passage of the Tydings-McDuffie Act (1934), which provided for full independence for the Philippines 10 years after the creation of a constitution and the establishment of a Commonwealth government that would be the forerunner of an independent republic. As president, he reorganized the islands' military defense (aided by Gen. Douglas MacArthur as his special adviser), tackled the huge problem of landless peasants in the countryside who still worked as tenants on large estates, promoted the settlement and development of the large southern island of Mindanao, and fought graft and corruption in the government. A new national capital, later known as Quezon City, was built in a suburb of Manila. I also found out that Quezon is a long-time columnist and editorial writer of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and head of its "Speaker’s Bureau." He is also a columnist of and assistant managing editor and editorial writer for The Philippine Free Press weekly news.…

Dekada '70 is the story of a family caught in the middle of the tumultuous decade of the 1970's. It details how a middle class family struggled with and faced the changes that empowered Filipinos to rise against the Marcos government. This series of events happened after the bombing of Plaza Miranda, the suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus, the proclamation of Martial Law and the random arrests of political prisoners. The oppressiveness of the Marcos regime made people become more radical. This shaping of the decade are all witnessed by the female character, Amanda Bartolome, a mother of five boys. While Amanda's sons grow, form individual beliefs and lead different lives, Amanda reaffirms her identity to state her stand as a Filipino citizen, mother and woman. Dekada '70 introduces the new generation of Filipino readers, to the story of a family of a particular time in Philippine history. Its appeal lies in the evolution of its characters…

One can say that the major contribution brought to the Philippine literature under the American Regime (1898-1941) is the production of the Philippine Literature in English, which is divided into three different time frames : The Period of Re-Orientation (1898-1910); Imitation (1910-1925); and Self-Discovery (1925). The Philippine Literature in English saw it’s dawn with the introduction of free public instruction and the use of English as a Lingua Franca in all levels of education in public schools.…
