Attraction and the formation of relationships in today’s society is an everyday happening for most people and therefor it’s not surprising that numerous amounts of psychological research into interpersonal and social relationships has centred on romantic relationships. Researchers have found a number of likely factors that play a vital role in the formation of relationships, these being physical attractiveness, proximity, attitude similarity, demographic similarity and similarity in personality. Physical attractiveness in the Western World is of great importance and research has shown that being physically attractive is one of the primary determinants of whether or not you develop a relationship with someone. Investigations have shown that physical attractiveness makes people more popular and applies to both platonic and romantic relationships. A study done by Brigham (1971) found that physically attractive individuals are thought of as being generally attractive and being sociable, exciting, interesting, poised and sexually warm. Cunningham (1986) examined the particular features of men and women that make them attractive to the opposite sex and found that in relation to women what men found most attractive were large eyes, small eyes and a small chin, whereas for men, women looked for square jaws, small eyes and thin lips in terms of attraction.…

The eyes, the heart, the brain all play an important role on attraction, but neurons communicate that sudden interest towards something or someone in the brain. Humans’ emotions are very complex because sometimes one cannot explain why and how they like or are attracted to someone. Thus, making it difficult to say that all people are attracted to the same thing. People might feel an attraction toward a similar thing, but the attraction is often determined differently in each individual because each individual thinks and expresses differently. For example, Personality, looks, attitude, good sense of humor are some of the common characteristics that some individuals are attracted to and consider in future partners.…

A man may see beauty in a woman, but this idea is relative. Compared to another woman, she may not seem so beautiful. Over time, her beauty will fail with age. Unlike the woman, the form of beauty itself will always remain beautiful. The man's thought of the beautiful woman remains merely opinion, while the form of beauty itself represents true knowledge.…

What I believe attract us to one another is the physical appearance, what we see when we first meet a person, although there’s often more to that. The reason I say this is some people can meet someone who they physically like, but can be easily turned off by their personality or it can be the opposite where the person overlooks how less attractive the other person may be but their personality is what may have captured them. All other things being equal, we prefer highly attractive individuals as dates, as friends, and to interact with in a general situation. This so happens to be true in today’s society, women my age tend to want to hang around attractive or pretty girls oppose to someone who is less attractive. It makes them and their whole circle of friends look good. While individuals might desire a relationship with an attractive person, they might not desire a relationship with the not so attractive individual. For example, most people tend to date those who they feel they are more attractive too or have the same type of similarities and personalities from those who are less attractive but may not have the same similarities. I often wonder does it matter if the person you’re attractive to don’t share the same qualities. Even though opposites can attract whether their attractive or not?!…

The physical attractiveness of a person influences every individual throughout every community, across the United States and around the world. All people inherit and alter their physical attractiveness, which is determined by complex, interdependent, physical, and non-physical factors. Hidden and not-hidden values drive thoughts and actions with significant effects and realities whereby higher physical attractiveness is beneficial, lower physical attractiveness is detrimental and associated pursuits are relentless. Physical attractiveness may look skin-deep as a surface aspect of appearance, but looks can be deceiving. Researchers throughout the world collect empirical data complemented with anecdotal data to probe beyond the surfaces. Through investigations that meet meticulous scientific methodological procedures, acute observations reveal previously undetected dimensions that advance understanding about physical attractiveness (Patzer, 2006).…

For me personally, I think the effects of advertising and the media distorted what I thought the ideal women looked like and acted like. I think when everyone starts to discover an interest in women (or men) they start to have a mental check list of likes and dislikes. Because of the media at a young age I thought that I was supposed to like tall, big breasted women, who liked sports, beer, and partying because those are the things that I liked and things that girls in movies I liked. As I got older I realized that outer beauty can fade with age for the women I was interested in as well as for myself. Inner beauty however, seems to be the thing that I have most sought after because it still remained after all is said and done. I feel that by being interested in a women’s personality has in turn made me more desirable because I am no longer just a shallow d-bag only interested in one thing. I still don’t mind the sports and beer part, as long as it comes with a sense of humor and a personality. (193 words)…

When looking at mate selection, I agree with Dr. Helen Fisher’s findings that attraction is one of the primary factors in mate selection (DNews, 2014). There is a reason that two complete strangers can come together in a room and end up intimate with each other whereas two other strangers can come together in a room and never see one other again. The video showed the chemical reaction we encounter during courtship (DNews, 2014), something our brains have been doing this since the dawn of mankind. When a person is looking for a mate they will encounter several potential perspectives until they find that one specific person they’re attracted to over anyone else.…

Men look for partners who are physically attractive and women are more interested in resources a partner could provide. This may be due to a male selecting a woman who is healthier and therefore more fertile, the healthier the woman the more attractive she seems. While women seek signs of fertility and heath in a partner they are more concerned about resources, for example wealth, intelligence and strength. Women therefor seek to enhance their looks and men advertise their status. This is confirmed by Waynforth and Dunbar who used ads to assess what men and women seek and advertise. They found that 44% of men seek a physically attractive partner compared to 22% of…
