A&P Essay
Have you ever met someone you would do anything for? The same person could change your entire life or have no effect whatsoever yet you may never know. In the years of young adulthood we all have a huge desire to attract a future mate. The feelings such as love can drive people to do things that are extreme and out of their ordinary routine.
A&P is a very intriguing story, like many teens, this story is simple on the surface when in fact much thought goes into every word. He uses a lot of literary devices and details to show how complex our teen minds can be. This text appealed to me because it is very relatable for many young adults. We have all been through a situation where an attractive person or group of

As the story opens the young gentleman working the register focuses in on three girls, all around the same age, who enter the store. This group of girls stand out from the rest of the A&P shoppers with their attire, for not many walk into a grocery store in only their bathing suits. After his eyes follow them up and down each aisle they finally approach his register and his chance to speak to these beautiful girls, especially “Queenie”. Yet before he gets to take advantage of this opportunity, his manager comes up to the group informing them of their decency policy; the girls

hurriedly finish up their purchase and exit the building with blushing faces. The young boy even though he doesn’t even know these girls from Adam, stands up for them to his manager and his
“embarrassing ways,”. Even though this job is his entire life, he gives it up for these three girls who barely know of his existence.
All throughout this text the author masters the art of imagery to the audience. With every chance given to him he provided the reader every piece of detail and information possible.

I personally never have conjured up the couraged to talk to one, yet i know many of my male co workers who would and have done so when given a chance. When working one may be much more comfortable and confident due to knowing the establishment and knowledgeable in that environment. My coworker, Jesse, tries approaching ladies when given such a chance; he may flirt or give them free food if possible yet most of the time he watches them with heart shaped eyes and a keen smile. In that moment he may do anything possible for the ladies just for a chance to be noticed by them as more than just a waiter, similar to our main character.
A&P is not the only story about a guy falling for an unattainable girl. Araby by James
Joyce contains a similar conflict; the young boy ends up falling in love with his neighbor’s older sister and feels as if he would do anything for her. He ends up takes a late night train to Araby to find her a gift yet when he gets there many of the shops are closed and there is only one left

open. The young lady in the shop asks if he needs help finding anything and when he

The three boys Ed, Steve and Tom have had the opportunity to prove themselves right to all the sexist girls in their school. They are going to become a fake lady so that they can answer teenage girls’ problems in Tom’s mother’s magazine. Each month they get an email from Toms mum with problems from girls around the state. They come up with solutions to the problem and send an email back to Toms mum with the answers. They only do this to prove that boys can produce a ‘single word of half decent English’. John Updike captures a day in the life of a young teenage boy named Sammy whose adolescence gets the best of him. Sammy works at a grocery store and is employed by old-fashioned store manager, Lengel. Sammy encounters three young girls in suggestive swim suits at the store. To the manger this was very distasteful and inappropriate for girls this age. Sammy’s heightened hormones and fixation for the girls gave him a sense of recklessness as he defended the girls after Lengel insults them. Sammy was not thinking ahead to what his parents would say or what he would do to make money for the rest of the summer.…

    3. The physical description of the three girls seems like the exposition of the story because the rest of it follows them through the store and relates Sammy’s thoughts about them. The carefully detailed portrait of Queenie, the leader of the three girls, is of great value to the story. Queenie seems like a typical proud teenage girl, and she serves to further characterize Sammy. The fact that he quits his job just so this girl will notice him transforms him into a susceptible young man.…

Firstly, the protagonist is a young adult working as a checker in a grocery store A&P. The location of this store is “right in the middle of the town, and surrounded by two banks and the congregational church and the newspaper store and three real-estate offices, an appropriate symbol for the mass ethic of a consumer-conditioned society” (quoted in Porter, M 1155). Basically, as one resident of the village, Sammy is like his neighbors not used to see anything different from the conservative concept. However, as a young boy, not merely does not he disgust at their so-called informal dress, but he is captivated by the three girls’ sexually attractive appearance. Quite immature, when the three girls walk into his eyesight, Sammy stands in the third checking slot “with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not” (Updike 765). At first he is shocked, but after that he gazes at the appearance of “Queenie”, a name Sammy uses to call one of the girls to himself, especially spotlighting on her uncovered abdomen for he narrates that “her belly was still pretty pale” (Updike 766).…

"Quitting his job is his first step in achieving this goal. Sammy was obviously enthralled by the girls from the moment they walked in the A & P. He was not keen on the other two girls, but Queenie overwhelmed him. He may have even taken a liking to Queenie, but any average, nineteen-year old male would do the same after witnessing such striking beauty as is described. On the other hand, the average male would not quit a job and create such turmoil if…
