Macklemore Same Love Analysis
"That is so gay.” “You are such a faggot.” These are two phrases we hear fairly often in our everyday lives and do not really question what they are actually saying. Yet theses words are accepted as everyday vocabulary in America. Our society has become so immune to these words that we have forgotten what they mean and how they can affect people. In Macklemore’s song "Same Love” and his music video he addresses society's false preconceived notions on homosexuality, the use of hateful slurs in the music industry, and how we as a society need to stop ignoring the sexual equality movement and

An article entitled “Dear, Young Ladies Who Love Chris Brown So Much They Would Let Him Beat Them,” written by Roxane Gay, discusses how some women will allow R & B artist Chris Brown to abuse them without having any consent. The writer also discusses other famous men who have been let off with easy jail sentences or no time at all when committing such a crime. Gay stresses that men are allowed bail too easily in their crimes against women. It’s been this way for centuries, yet we still allow this act of crime to be hidden in the shadows.…

Soul music, is music that was originated in black America gospel singing, is closely related to rhythm and blues, and is characterized by intensity of feeling and earthiness. Soul music is more of a calming type of music, it's has songs from regret and hate, to love and happiness. The song I've chose was "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. This song is somewhat slow and also talks about love. And the instruments in this song just make it more enjoyable.…

No freedom till we're equal, damn right I support it.” These are lyrics from a song called “Same Love” about marriage equality by rapper Macklemore. Rap is the one genre of music that Robert Peters singled out as being consistently and always violent in his article “Censorship of Violence in Popular Entertainment is Justified”. In this article, there is one large factor missing, evidence supporting his claim that there is too much violence in the media. Peters shows little to no support for his four reasons that media is too violent, he doesn’t name how much is “too much”, and he misses many opportunities to use prime examples as if he hasn’t done much research into the subject himself.…

As well as raising awareness for the equality of homosexuals, the song also points out the fact that the word ‘’gay’’ is used as a derogative term in not just the music industry but also in the world, that the word “gay” has lost all its original meaning and is instead used in our everyday vocabulary because it has been embedded in our culture. (“We become so numb to what we’re saying” )…

One of my favorite songs, recently, has been J. Cole’s Love Yourz. This song relate to feelings that we can all relate to, feelings of envy and jealously. We often look at the life styles of those around us, and we see what they have, and we compare ourselves to them. We feel that if we don’t live a certain life style or drive a fancy car that we are not living a purposeful life. We fall into the trap of focusing on others blessings and ignoring our own. From personal experience I have done this. I have looked at the blessing of others, and wondered why my blessings were not the same.…

If you listen to almost any rap song especially from the big time platinum selling artists, basically their lyrics are going to be about one of two things…the money they have or about bitches and hoes. Besides the fact that with today’s many technological advancements that it’s hard to be successful in the music industry with the illegal downloading, leaking etc. If you want to make a name for yourself and maintain your fan base at the end of the day you have to sell records…Especially being a new artist you’re going to be judged heavily on how well your first single goes which ultimately determines how well your album will sale but all that’s based on if people feel your music and how well your image is put out to the public. So the dilemma comes when artist are faced with the question are you going with the norm? Or are you willing to branch out and jeopardize your career? Many times you see artist that are labeled “one hit wonders” that can’t produce another hit and then the only way to redeem themselves it to feature themselves with a more well-known artist to help boost their credentials. So instead of taking that chance and being different and not playing into “the dominant chorus of misogyny” (Mclune 297) they easily revert back to the common vernacular mandates that are in every song as somewhat of a safety net in order to be considered a “down, hip and mainstream artist”. As stated in the article those who decide not to join the…

This past year has been an AMAZING year for me. Whether it be doing well in school, playing football for the first time, or even having Mr. Schmidt as my English teacher, it has been incredible. Even though Kanye made his song, “Amazing”, to show the world his massive ego, there are some lyrics that can represent how this year felt to me. After originally coming out in the album 808s & Heartbreak, it has been in numerous soundtracks and even entrance music for UFC fighters. Through many simple actions, this year has been one to remember. Tearing my ACL is a perfect example of how one event has not only changed this year, but for the rest of my life. There have also been lots of courses that I enjoyed and can relate to lyrics of the song, Although there have been many songs that have resonated with me and had meaning in my life, “Amazing”, by Kanye West, best illustrates my ninth grade year at Carmel High…

The link I post is a lyric song other than normal music video and it named ‘The Gay Song’. The singer is apparently a girl who clearly expressed her not interested in men at all but a completely gay in graceful melody. I was undergoing a complicated time and didn’t decided my representation until I found this song. I finally make determination on this song because of the lyrics ‘sue me if I’m different, or sue me if you can’. Firstly, She’s being a member of the non-normal sexual group and also brave enough to be different. She is declaiming her lesbians’ sexual identity. Furthermore, she’s singing no care for incomprehension from the public. It indicates to be fearless claiming to be homosexuality is difficult because a group of people hardly respect this kind of relationship.…

In 1974, Dolly Parton released “I Will Always Love You” in a response to her breakup with Porter Wagoner. Her song was a hit in the early seventies, but Whitney Houston brought out the best in the simple lyrics. Whitney Houston had one of best voices in the music industry and she was known for adding her own flavor to classic songs. Although Whitney Houston was not the original writer of “I Will Always Love You,” many people thought that this song was her original song. Nevertheless, The Body Guard would have been incomplete without the famous love ballet.…

There is a saying that states “everyone is in title to their own personal opinion”, and their own point of view of thoughts. With that being said, a formal criticism can be use when defining art in everyone’s eyes. Art exist in its own sake, therefore, art is not only paintings or sculptures but also music. Music can be criticize in several different ways depending on one’s personal opinion and point of view. My formal criticism on the art of music will be followed upon the artist (The Weeknd); in addition, lyrics to one of his songs “shameless” and the type of song shameless comes about.…
