Listening Analysis

Listening does not come as natural for me as it does for others. I am always either being distracted or simply just spacing out, especially in class. Tuning out the lessons is easy when I am bored and or tired. Yet, I try my best when it comes to communicating with friends and family. I have been told that I have selective hearing and it does get me in trouble, a lot. There are times when I am in a middle of a conversation, where I don’t catch on to what the person is talking about and I end up just nodding and smiling like I understand. Or I’ll end up saying something of opposite and at that moment feel stupid and look like an idiot who totally missed the whole discussion. Either way, listening is a skill that I am constantly working on.
We were walking through the hallway filled with students, shoulder to shoulder, trying to get through to their next class. I had a very hard time concentrating on the discussion I was having with my friend. Everyone around us was loud, locker doors were opening and closing, students would play music from their headphones, and teachers would constantly scold some students and keep on watch as we walked. So I ended up not really saying much, but just putting my input whenever I could and nodded my head. My head was down and at some point, I realized Dominique had stopped talking to me and was just staring at me. I looked back and gave her a ‘what’ face and then she asked me if I heard anything she said and I nodded my head no and said: “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch all of that”. I would then relay what I heard and she would fill me in the parts I missed, and by that time the crowd of students had dispersed into a few and I was able to hear the rest of the conversation.
