Ms. Gloria Smithson

Dear Ms. Smithson:

We greatly appreciate the special attention you have given our son, Jason, this past semester. The effect you have had on him is tremendous! His grades, as well as his self-esteem, have shown great improvement!

As you well know, Jason was having much difficulty in his math class. Before you began tutoring him after school, he was spending three to five hours every day after school doing math homework, yet his grades continued to fall. When we tried to help him, he just became more frustrated with us and himself.

With your help, Jason has regained his confidence, and his math homework has once again become manageable.

Jason can now approach next year without fear, thanks to you.

With much gratitude,

Janice Jones

On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, I was blessed with the opportunity to sit in on a Mathematical class at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, Florida. This was an opportunity to observe the function of a core class at the school that I teach and Substitute for. The teacher’s name was Mrs. Minor-Walker, which is one of our 7th grade teachers. When I walked into the classroom, I shook her hand and informed her of what I was intending on doing today. She was more than glad to assist with my assignment. These students were seventh grade students. This was an intermediate class, in which most of these children have encountered some sorts of issues with comprehending Mathematics prior to this year. Due to the…

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Burns came into this realization after talking with a student named Paul about multiplication. She discusses three issues that are essential to teaching mathematics. This includes helping students make the connections among mathematical ideas, to build the new information on the student's previous learning foundation, and to accompany correct answers with an explanation.…

At times, Ariana chooses to stay on the rug after a lesson for additional support. This shows that she is being reflective of her learning. She appears to enjoy our inquiry work around mathematical concepts. In collaborative groups, Ariana offers her insight and pushes her peers to try out different methods. I often hear her say, “Wait everyone. I know we can try another way. So let’s just try it and see what happens.” Ariana would benefit from practicing his multiplication facts 6-12 to help increase automaticity. This will support her as she encounters complex problems. Additionally, Ariana would should continue to double check her work by using an inverse operation or alternative…

At the beginning of ninth grade, I was slowly recovering from clinical depression, a cruel, brooding disorder that makes one feel as if they would be content with drowning in the endless unforgiving abyss of the ocean. Along with this pestering grim recovery came the stress and lingering anxiety of potentially failing a freshman math class. Mr. Albaugh, my ninth grade math teacher, was a fairly young, arrogant, but undoubtedly intelligent math teacher. He would always have some kind of smug retort to a student’s question, and upon the remark, “I do not…

Grinning faces greeted me as I entered the room, “We did it!”, exclaimed Aidan and Harry. After a semester of tutoring two ‘failing’ students at a local school, it was fantastic feeling knowing they had passed their GCSE Math. They had surpassed their expectations and it was humbling to know that my two hours each week with them had played a small part in their success. Due to class sizes of up to fifty, students would switch off and consequently slip behind in their math lessons. I aimed to make my teaching sessions as engaging as possible by showing them the real world applications of what they were learning, to show my tutees that math wasn’t, but a deeply interesting subject and proficiency in it could unlock many opportunities for them…
