Leadership
Zaynah Himani
Storey - C104 Essay

"Enlightened leadership is spiritual if we understand spirituality not as some kind of religious dogma or ideology but as the domain of awareness where we experience values like truth, goodness, beauty, love and compassion, and also intuition, creativity, insight and focused attention" - Deepak Chopra What is the significance of being a good leader and what does it take to become one? When we think of leaders, we think of a strong individual who motivates his/her team not only with words, but by example as well. Great leaders have the ability to bring out the best in people and those around them. Leadership is measured by success, there has to be progress and some sense of accomplishment after a certain amount of time. Confidence, manners, an outgoing and understanding mindset, good social skills and a positive attitude are the major attributes that best prepare a person to become a leader.
With confidence, a person has the ability to show their team they can do anything if they put their mind to it. They can step out on to their field and throw their touchdown, open and maintain a restaurant or boutique, produce an Oscar-winning film, put on a great presentation in their C104 class, the options are endless. Good manners are crucial as well. We often see bad manners everywhere, including the workplace. Bad manners are a form of incivility – low intensity, deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of norms for mutual respect. They are characteristically rude and discourteous, displaying a lack of regard for others. With this lack of display, who will look up to their leader? As a leader, there is an important role to play to create a culture of civility in organizations. A leader needs to communicate expectations along with rewards, recognition and consequences. A leader needs to be a role model for expected leadership behaviors. According to an article from CollegeJournal from The Wall

Leadership has been an integral virtue of an individual to be successful and effective in business, politics, sports or the military. It is stated by Howard (2005) that leadership can be regarded as an ability of an individual to influence a group of people to respond to organisational goals and as a means to enhance others’ performance by forming operative groups, motivating and giving a right direction to them. It means that, as far as a business is concerned, achieving an organisational objective can only be feasible when the organisation is operated in the way that every single individual has the same sense of purpose and seeks the same goal through an appropriate leadership. This essay discusses the essence of leadership and analyses various leadership styles, in particular, the leadership style that enabled Abraham Lincoln to become such an effective leader in accordance with the framework offered by Darling and Leffel (2010).…

Everyone has probably played the game "Follow the Leader" back in elementary school. It is a game where the leader stands in front of the line. He or she can say or do anything, and her followers (standing in a straight line behind her) must repeat exactly the same thing he or she does or says. Whoever was picked to be the leader must have loved the experience because one had the freedom to do whatever they please, while others followed miserably or happily depending on what the leader is saying or doing. However, if one was the follower, one would wait anxiously to be the next chosen leader. At the same time, one must somehow express his or her self in a fashion that will make them stand out from the rest of the students. Whether he or she is perfectly imitating the leader or behaving really respectfully of others. Nonetheless, who determines who should be the leader? What kind of characteristics must a leader possessed? What makes a great leader (Robbins, 2005)? Is there only one kind leadership? These questions will be answered as you continue to read on. In addition, you will come across case studies, real life experiences, and my own observation on how leaders in my work setting exhibit leadership behavior and how followers respond to it.…

William Cohen says “Great leaders are made not born” (Cohen 1998). If one has got the want and drive, one can be an effecient leader. Good leaders develop with a persistent process of self-study, experience, education, and training. (Jago, 1982). Leadership and the study of this event have its origin in the beginning of civilization. Heros in Greece, rulers in Egypt and patriarchs from Bible all have a common thing that is leadership.
