Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…

Spending three hours a day, seven days a week together for three years straight results in a very close relationship between a coach and its’ players. This relationship, whether it be good or bad, can impact a team immensely. I have experienced a great relationship with my coach and team. Betsy Boetger, also known as B.R., is the West High girls’ basketball coach who I have shared this relationship with. B.R. is a superior coach because she genuinely cares for her players, is very organized, and constantly pushes us to do our best.…
One of my favorite stories about Wooden’s coaching methods relates to a recruiting preseason situation where a player had immense natural ability, but UCLA denied the player a scholarship on the recommendation of Wooden who identified a character flaw in the player during the…

In general, my daily processes are part of an action plan defined in my comprehensive goal setting spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is at the heart of my training. As a self-taught athlete, I have to be very honest and self-critiquing and then back my analysis with my once a month training activity with my professional rock climbing instructor. My instructor supports my methods as the best for my present time available to dedicate to the sport. I have to rely on my past successes and setbacks in other areas of life plus my physical, mental, and spiritual strength as affirmations to propel me into the future.…

At my tournament the other weekend it was a college showcase meaning college coaches were coming from all around to recruit players. Tony, the ‘coach’ for the weekend did not play my teammates in their actual positions; therefore, they did not play to their highest potential since they never practiced the positions they were put in. It did not seem like many college coaches stayed long to watch my team, this is weird because my teammates are exceptional soccer players that any college would be lucky to have. Collage coaches did not stay long because Tony put his ego ahead of the team’s future soccer careers. The whole team knew that if Coach Jen was there she would have been all-in to make sure everyone look as sensational as they could. If Tony would have put his best foot forward, like any good coach, then my teammates would have been able to show colleges how amazing of soccer players they truly are. Studies from True Sport show that a coach is the leading positive influence on children. If a coach cannot make positive decisions, then it can be a domino effect leading to the players not making ‘good’ decisions risking their own playing…
Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…
When I decided to join cross country team my freshman year, I never envisioned myself being a part of what would become known as “the best team in Hammonton history.” Three years ago, I finished the season as one of the very worst on the team, with no expectations being placed on me for the future. Fast forward to one month ago, when I along with my fellow six varsity teammates lead Hammonton to its first Atlantic County Championship in school history. While much of my improvement can be attributed to my physical growth over the years, I would have never reached that level of success if I did not realize how important it is to maximize my effort in everything that I do. My success in Cross Country was not as much caused by my physical development, but more so by the evolution of my mentality.…
One of the reasons John Wooden was successful as a basketball coach was because he was the best teacher at the sport and taught his players life skills. He didn’t win ten national championships because he had talent. He won because he taught fundamentals and basic basketball. He instilled in his players that fundamentals is the key to success. To this day his players still use what he taught them and take that with them as they move on with their lives. He was a coach and a father to the players. He always compared how life was like basketball and the players understood what he…
The way a coach talks about academic success can impact how athletes perceive the importance of school work. For example, a coach's attitude toward grades in the classroom can make a huge difference toward how the team views the importance of their school work. This work ethic that is built from being a student and an athlete are both…
When most people think of coaches and athletes an image of an athletic, strong individual comes to mind. Sadly, there is also a lack of intelligence and admirable character qualities associated with this perception. Though there are many that fit this persona perfectly, it's the ones that defy it that make for a truly unique and life charging experience. I was lucky enough to meet such a man.…
