Peggy Davis Observation
Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures. As she went on one point that jumped out to me was her concept of P.I.E. Before hearing her bring that acronym up I had never heard it before. P.I.E stands for performance, image, and exposure. Performance would be how effective you are in your position. Image is what they think of you. In addition to image, she said in the first 3 to 5 seconds a person is already forming their opinion about you through simple things like the way you dress, the people you hang around, or even the music you listen to. Finally she said exposure meaning that one would have to network strategically. Just about everyday it is reinforced that this is a …show more content…
By this she meant keeping yourself out there in the open for people to see you. Staying out there doesn’t mean to always look for recognition or credit for something but just letting people know who you are. Staying relevant also meant keeping you coaching staff up to date. For instance, Mrs. Davis had the football get concussion certified. By them getting this certification they would be able to recognize symptoms of a player with a possible concussion to prevent further injury. She also had the players get tested for Sickle Cell disease. It was not mandatory but the players would not play without having a

To their dismay, Rachel and Jackson discovered that her first husband had not finalized the divorce agreement. Technically this made Rachel an adulterer and a bigamist, and the scandal followed Jackson throughout his escalating political career. Emilie Davis was an African-American woman residing in the city of Philadelphia during the U.S Civil War. Still living with her family, Emilie worked as a seamstress while she attended the Institute of Colored Youth. Although she did not differ too much from the other free black women in her community, one thing that made Davis different was her diary. Emily kept a diary from the years of 1863 to 1865, and because of her entries, we today can get the closest thing to a firsthand experience of the events that took place in not only in Philadelphia but around the world during the Civil War. Of course, as we all know, the Civil War was most certainly not roses and rainbows. There were many ups and…

Although Shirley had great athletic skills as a soccer coach, she had surrendered her All-American high school position as basketball coach early on in her college career. This tells me that she was not as skilled in the techniques and current training methods that were needed to coach her new inherited basketball team. Shirley was a structured (task-oriented) leader, who believed that she got results by keeping the team constantly busy, while closely monitoring their exercise drills. However, she completely ignored their personal issues and emotions, with how they felt about the new strategy of offense training. She ignored their experience and suggestions and continued to tell them her way would work. It would have been better for Shirley if she had combined the Consideration (follower) leadership style along with some of the Structure style, because she would have been respected for her openness for team suggestions, while still being able to explain her own reasoning as to why she chose the motion…

I interviewed Ben Cleveland, who is the head Athletic Trainer for Oklahoma Baptist University. Athletic Trainers are not technically a field in leadership studies, but this interview was very beneficial to be because I want to be an Athletic Trainer at the high school level. This interview just reassured me that being an Athletic Trainer is truly what I want to do with my life. Before talking about how Ben views leadership, one has to know and understand his background and where he is coming from. Ben is originally from Mobile, Alabama and earned his undergraduate in Science in Athletic Training from the University of Alabama soon after that he obtained a Master’s of Science in Physical Education at Florida State University. Ben started as an assistant athletic trainer at Trevecca Nazarene University for seven years before accepting the job here at Oklahoma Baptist University.…

Positivity is not a demand, but it is a choice. Trust is not a necessity, but it is a benefit. In today's society, student athletes have begun play the game only for individual satisfaction. Sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, and baseball are now full of players with selfish attitudes instead of having team-driven mindsets. Athletes have lost their hope in coaches who do not give 100 percent devotion to their team during practice or game time. If a coach cannot give his or her all to the team, then neither should the players. Both coaches and student athletes must be able to come together as one during the time of a game in order to pull through effectively and benefit all who are involved. A strong…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…
