Hypatia of Alexandria Hypatia is a famous scholar from ancient Egypt. To this day, she is still the only famous mathematician from ancient times. She wrote many books on mathematical and philosophical concepts and became a great teacher. Hypatia is the first woman known to be able to analyze and teach highly advanced mathematics. She is still considered the only famous female mathematician even though all of her work is either lost or destroyed. Hypatia was born sometime around 370 AD. She grew up and lived all her life in Alexandria, Egypt. She most likely was raised by her father, Theon, although not much is known about her mother. Theon was the last member to be recorded at the Museum of Alexandria. The museum was an important place to share intellectual and cultural ideas. The Museum of Alexandria resembled what a university in the modern day. It is believed that Hypatia was taught mathematics, philosophy, literature, and various other arts by Theon. Hypatia chose to follow a life style devoted to her studies and never married. She was respected by the officials and loved by the people. She accomplished many discoveries alongside her father and others in her lifetime. Hypatia died at the age of forty-five when being attacked quite brutally by a mob. Hypatia made many accomplishments to make a name for herself throughout her lifetime. One of these accomplishments was able to become a teacher at Alexandria’s Neoplatonic School. She was later appointed as the director of the school in 400 AD. Hypatia wrote many books concerning mathematics and other various subject matters. She also wrote some criticisms on concepts in philosophical and mathematical fields. Hypatia stayed in contact

She combined the principles of free thinking and the ideal of pure living. She was known for her prudence, moderation, and self control, and for her ease of manner and her beauty. She was recognized as an eloquent teacher and by 390 A.D. her circle of influence was well-established. She also symbolized learning and science which in time of Western history were largely identified by early Christians with Paganism. As such, she was the focal point in the tension and riots between Christians and non-Christians that racked more than once in Alexandria.
