How Long Is School Too Long
Do you think it’s too short, too long or just right? This is a question many are asking about our school days. Many kids in schools today are saying “the school day is too long; I have no time for homework...” Etc. Is the school day really too long? Or does it even need to be longer?
The school year consists of 180 days of school to receive credit. Is this too short or too long? Knowing there is 365 days in the year, some may say it is, some may say it is not. 180 days of the year in the classroom. That’s 185 days of the year that we are out of school. And each school day spending the majority of the day, in the classroom.
This may seem alright, if that’s all that it was, but many students are doing extracurricular activities such as sports.

According to several studies (Harrison 33), participation in extracurricular activities such as band, theatre, and athletics is linked to improved academic achievement. High school students surveyed said that their involvement in these activities played an important role in their education, and these students did show higher grades than those not involved. Other studies conducted soon after the rule went into effect in Texas schools found that dropout rates were lower for students participating in extracurricular activities (Harrison 38), although, it should be noted that these studies were conducted in the late 1980’s. Speaking from personal experience, many students, including myself, that find out they are or are at risk of becoming ineligible start working harder in that particular class so they can continue to participate. Due to the teamwork that these UIL events nurture, other students involved in the same activities would try and help their friend who’s…

What is two to three months long, popular, and unnecessary? Summer Break! Educators around the world say children should attend year round schools. They state this because The United States is falling behind other countries in education (Kelsey 28). Other educators, however, are saying students and teachers need a summer break to refresh their bodies and minds and to make new lesson plans. Students and teachers should give up summer break and attend year round schools.…

It may sound logical but Dr Von Hippel has debunked this myth after completing an experiment. He states, “Students in “year-round” schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools... A sociologist at Ohio State University found that, over a full year, math and reading test scores improved about the same amount for children in year-round schools as they did for students whose schools followed a traditional nine-month calendar.” There's no academic improvement and on top of that many people believe that year round school is longer than a normal school which is also false. They have the same amount of days as a traditional nine-month high school however Instead they have “tracks”. So track 1 could have school for 3 weeks then they would have vacation for 3 weeks while track 2 has 3 weeks of school after coming back from vacation. This also limits who is seen by who every day if two people’s schedules do not cross. Public students should be given what's best for them. If year-round has no academic improvement then why should summer be taken away? At least summer benefits students with nutrients from the…

Now the first thought for me was that is was only fifteen minutes more than our regular school day, which I was fine with. Looking into it more though, little children are going to get restless and not pay attention to the teacher and won’t learn anything. Another problem with the longer school days is that there will be not a lot of time for extracurricular activities. This means that kids are going to get home late at night and still have homework on top of that. We can’t really remove extracurricular activities out of our lives either. These activities teach us teamwork, responsibility, competition, and diversity.…

Imagine going to school all year and having 60 days in school and 20 days off after those 60 days of school. This would be going on all year long until 180 days of school are up. Year-round schooling should not be something that is allowed because there may not be time for vacations because of the year-round school schedules, Year-round schooling does not help kids academically, And lastly because year-round schooling does not benefit the students and makes them do worse on test.…

To begin with, kids normally get exhausted by the middle of the school week because they need a longer break. When you are tired you don't really try, resulting in not learning anything. If they had longer breaks, they could get the rest their brains need in order to reset. Not only that, but they would try to learn harder because they are ready to, not…

The debate between education versus scheduled vacations has been in agendas of school committee meetings for many years, so is summer vacation a thing of the past? Having year round school with re-occurring breaks has many benefits for the students, teachers and parents. Mini breaks throughout the semester instead of a two month summer vacation could have many benefits such as a reduction of stress, improvement of learning and would help students stay in routine. Schooling should be rescheduled to include year round classes with reoccurring short breaks.…

The first reason kids should not be having longer school days is because kids will be exhausted. Most kids are all ready having 7-8 hours of school. Another few hours, and they will be at school for around 10-11 hours. Also by the time kids come home it will be around 5:00 P.M. Then When kids get home they will have lots of school homework, and extracurricular homework like Kumon, ENOPI practicing dance, or others. Another thing is, sleep. School affects their sleep and their sleep affect how they do in school. So if they don't have enough sleep they won’t be able to focus and they might be late for the bus. This is…

    Why Do School Start Later

Some may be thinking, school days will be longer. That is a very good concern, but if school went longer, kids would have less time to do other important things. It would be just like a late start. Us children and teachers do pretty good at handling that. Lastly, kids would be more awake, so the kids would be more smart, so that would mean it would take less time to learn something. So it is okay to have short days because children will be more awake to learn.…

I am in an understanding that you are in support of making the already long school years even longer. I see some of the points that the people of the United States have come up with but to be fair, the school years are already fairly long and stressful for the students. Being a student at the time being, I can speak for many students and say that the school year is long enough. We go to school nine out of the twelve months of every year with short breaks. Those breaks are there to give not only the faculty a break from dealing with all of the students but also to give the students a break from the constant work load that is put on them five days a week, for high school students, seven hours a day. If that is not enough, then I do not know what kind of schooling that you had. The amount that is already required is more than enough. For the school year to be longer, it would be an overload for kids and even adults all over the country.…

I believe that schooldays should be shorter. I believe that School days should definitely be shorter and everyone agrees because kids are coming home tired and fall asleep waking up the next day with nothing done until the weekend and a whole cycle start again. School days are 6.5-7 hours long and because of this stay/work at home parents don't get much time to see there kids and because of this kids get disconnected from their families and don't talk much to them. During school when kids act up and get suspended they lose so much time about 13-14 HOURS GONE!!!! I get that the reason school days are long is because they want to cram things into that schedule but really they aren't cramming anything in most of class time is spent in working…

Schoolwork and the benefits of extracurricular activities tend to go by the wayside when adolescents work long hours. As more and more teens have filled the numerous part-time jobs offered by fast-food restaurants and malls, teachers have faced increasing difficulties. They must both keep the attention of tired pupils and give homework to students who simply do not have time to do it. In addition, educators have noticed less involvement in the extracurricular activities that many consider a healthy influence on young people. School bands and athletic teams are losing players to work and sports events are poorly attended by working students. Those teens who try to do it all for examples homework, extracurricular activities and work may find themselves exhausted and prone to illness. A recent newspaper story, for example, described a girl in Pennsylvania who came down with mononucleosis as a result of aiming for good grades, playing on two school athletic teams and working thirty hours a week.…
