Freshman Mentor Letter
My hands were nervously shaking as I tried to open the letter. Was it a rejection? An acceptance? My whole spring break was haunted by this one single letter. Finally, I opened the letter and my eyes began to scan the letter. My eyes scanned it again and again, processing what just happened… I MADE IT! I could barely hold in the joy! I didn’t know what was happening, but my feet were moving towards my parents room, and I barged in. Mom! Dad! I became a FMP! I’m in the Freshmen Mentor Program.

FMP is all about making the incoming freshmen feel at ease, helping them transition into their first year of high school, and letting them know all the tricks around the school. We spend half of our lunch with the freshmen making them feel comfortable

One of the greatest leadership roles I have taken on has been at my school, which was deciding to become a peer mentor. The focus of this role was to help underclassmen by influencing them to further their education. Attending the training for this program opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that they had just by doing well in school. I knew that by becoming a mentor I would develop important dexterities such as being accountable for someone who needs guidance. The excitement in being peer mentor was impacting young minds with positivity about their futures. I am interested in participating in the Leadership Development Program because I want to be a Mentor once again. I was a mentor for high school freshmen in my senior year, but that year was enough for me to want to do it again. Just being that person who they would ask for help or for information made me feel enlightened in a way, and certainly made me happier because I knew I was positively impacting their life. And I know that mentoring high school freshmen and mentoring college freshmen is different, but I still believe that I can help those incoming students transition to a new chapter of their lives as reassuringly as possible as I did so with my group of high school freshmen.…

From the moment I was notified that I could sign up to be an OSPREY Camp mentor for the second time, I eagerly started the process to mentor 5th grade students in an outdoor environment once again. From the previous year, I had already made up my mind to sign up again this year, and the remainder of my high school years. My first year serving as a mentor, as a freshman, was an exceptional experience where I emerged more fond of the experience and fulfillment that I felt, rather than the over 100 hours of community service that I received. I was excited to return for another year, however, there was a massive roadblock that strongly made me reconsider.…
