Figurative Language In Stephen Curry's Poem 'Famous'
When you look on your phone, and you see a famous person, are you like me and say, “I want to be famous like them some day”. Well one day when I was younger I wanted to be exactly like a basketball player. I wanted to be like Michael Jordan. But now something changed I want to be exactly like Stephen Curry. Why? I want to because one I'm not going to be tall enough to be like Mike. Secondly I can shoot the ball pretty well for a seventh grader. Stephen Curry made 402 three pointers in 79 games that's almost 5.1 threes in one game some players don't even make one in a game but yet to average 5 in a game that's really good. The thing is you don't have to be well known by people to be famous for something else. Like in the poem "Famous" by Shihab Naomi, it states that "a river is famous to a fish" the meaning of famous in this poem is well known. Isn't the river well known to the fish? Isn't a …show more content…
That isn't really figurative because that is saying exactly what it means. Figurative language is something that doesn't mean what it says. The phrase above means exactly what it says. In “Fame is a fickle food” the closest thing to figurative language is rhyming and that isn't figurative language. These poems are a great example of how you don't have to have figurative language for it to be a poem.

Lastly, they are different because in “ Fame is a fickle food ” there is variety of rhyming not every line but every few lines there is a rhyme for example “whose table table once a guest what not the second time is set”, that's a true rhyme. In the poem “Famous there is no rhyming. The beginning of each line begins almost the same. The blank is famous to the blank. For example “The river is famous to the fish”. There is no rhyming in “Famous” which means they are

First type of figurative language, “Yellow shoes the color of a pat of butter” (40). is a metaphor that stuck out the most to me. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Eddie thinks that a guys shoes are the color of butter. He points this out in the story because he says “Mr. yellow shoes seemed like a dude who could ice someone, stick a knife into a chest and step back quickly…

Michael Jordan, a basketball superstar, once said: “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” We all are destined for something great. There are people destined to be an Olympian. There are people who are destined to win an Oscar or to star in blockbuster movies. But there are people whose steps lead to the making of basketball legends.…

On the other hand, the players who are always in the media and having something to say about themselves are the ones who show negative influence on society. For example, when a super star which every kid looks up to is on TV bragging and being big headed does nothing but influence the kids to do the same. This is why I look up to Duncan, he doesn’t need all the media attention to show his fans what kind of super star he is.…

Figurative imagery was also used throughout the poem. The author uses them to express what the person is feeling or thinking. When he says, “her brain turns to water,” he is stating that she is not thinking about the real world because she is too busy concentrating on love. “The waitress floats towards you,” this explains how the speaker is in a crowded restaurant therefore the place is busy and the odds of her coming to take his order is very low, which makes her extraordinary and it seems like she is a angel floating. “His voice is a small boy turning somersaults in the green country of his blood,” which states that the old mans’ singing is calming and transports you to a joyful place, which helps forget the fact that it is just an old man on the bus.…

For example, a Nigerian celebrity Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, also known as Bobrisky, he is famous for acting stupid and doing unnecessary things on social media. He was able to gather attention when he claimed he had a lover who is assumed to be masculine gender despite the Nigerian constitution at that point in time which made such same-sex relationships an offense punishable by serving 14 years in a penitentiary. He isn’t famous for the good that he has done but for the nonsense, he posts on his social media pages like Instagram and Snapchat. I can also relate this essay to Fame 101 because the author just like Daum talks about how people became famous due to the scandals that they have created. And, they both differentiated fame and fame-iness. In fame 101 the author states that “fame might be a misnomer as many people confuse it with celebrity, Barrack Obama has fame.” The author of fame 101 considers people who have impacted our society and people who have talent as famous people. Daum did the same thing in her essay, “unlike actual fame, which involves some talent and hard work, “fame-iness” requires little more than a willingness to humiliation…

    Rich vs Poor

Being famous does not necessary mean bring rich, and vice-versa. Both generally bring satisfaction if brought to one in a positive manner, or in a way he/she intended it to. Because being famous and being rich are both signs leading to success, which in most cases, is the human’s ultimate goal. Being just either rich or famous, other than being a positive thing, could produce highly negative and unwanted end results too. A huge percentage of people are famous as a result of all sorts of negativity, such as criminal acts and negative politics. At the same time, a good part of the world’s drug lords and terrorism-driven groups are fairly rich too. So when does being rich or famous become a good thing? Usually, a combination of being rich and famous, surprisingly, doesn’t do as much harm to coexisting peers, as the former would. Although criminals who fall under lists such as ‘FBI’s Most Wanted’, turn out to be rich and famous, regardless of how they got to where they are. But a bigger portion of the ‘rich and famous’ category are occupied by highly paid movie stars and sportsmen, neither of whom does much harm to the society.…
