Tim Duncan's Positive Influence On Society
“The Big Fundamental” Many teams have that one player who is the big super star and is always gaining media attention. As for the San Antonio Spurs Tim Duncan or as some people call him “The Big Fundamental” is not quite this person. Tim Duncan is one of the greatest basketball players in the NBA who also shows a great amount of positive influence on society. Going into the NBA after college Tim Duncan had his mind set on getting an education first. Not all athletes get a college education because they want to hurry and make money. The reason why Duncan did this was because before his mother (who was dying from breast cancer) told him to finish college before he did anything else. While going to school at Wake Forest Duncan earned a …show more content…
On the other hand, the players who are always in the media and having something to say about themselves are the ones who show negative influence on society. For example, when a super star which every kid looks up to is on TV bragging and being big headed does nothing but influence the kids to do the same. This is why I look up to Duncan, he doesn’t need all the media attention to show his fans what kind of super star he is. Another way Tim Duncan has a positive influence on society is by giving back to the people. Duncan has a foundation called The Tim Duncan Foundation. Since coming to San Antonio, Tim has supported many wonderful causes. In an attempt to give back even more, Tim decided to create a foundation of his own. Therefore, on December 21, 2001, Tim announced the creation of the Tim Duncan Foundation. The Foundation funds nonprofit organizations in the areas of education, youth sports and recreation, and health awareness and research. To date, The Tim Duncan Foundation has raised over $650,000 to support its mission by supporting non-profit organizations and programs in South Texas, US Virgin Islands, and in North

Most people would be satisfied with winning an NBA championship at least once in their life, but not Shaquille O’Neal. According to an interview with Ebony Magazine, Mr. Shaq has massive academic plans. The basketball star already has his masters in business administration, but plans on receiving a doctoral degree in organizational learning and leadership from Barry University. It’s been three years since this interview article was posted, so it’s certain that Dr. O’Neal (as he wishes to be called from now on) achieved all his goals regarding his education. Not only did he strive to commence a career outside the basketball court, he also maintained an impressive 3.81 GPA after spending four and a half years completing the coursework and defending…

The opinion piece, “The Athlete as Agent of Change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton discusses how athletes use their platform to address injustice. “Sport has always been a way used to challenge convention.”(Bunch and Skorton, paragraph 3). Athletes have the power and ability to change an idea or convince people of their ideas. The position they are in allows them to use their fame to promote their beliefs and causes they support. I believe that athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda. One reason why athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda is because athletes’ platforms allow them to easily persuade or sway the fans and audience to the idea they support. “Sport is a powerful way to do so because…

Through the generations there have been many great athletes who have played in the NBA such as: Bill Russell who is considered to be one of the all-time great Boston Celtics. That is best known for winning eleven straight NBA championship, but he is not considered to be the greatest player due to the fact that during the time he played he didn’t receive the amount of money many people believe he deserved. Players like Allen Iverson who is best known for being one of the most versatile point guards in NBA history, but he is also not considered to be the greatest athlete in NBA history because he never won an NBA championship. Lastly Tim Duncan the power forward for the San Antonio Spurs who has won five NBA championships as well has made millions of dollars over his 17 career in the NBA, but he is also not considered to be the greatest NBA because Tim Duncan is looked…

LeBron James was a stellar basketball player. He was offered a full scholarship to The University of Indiana and took it. LeBron was one of the best players around, but he had to go to college for a year before he could be eligible for the draft. LeBron’s life goal was to become the best basketball player in the world. That never happened. LeBron James suffered from a severe leg injury midway through his college season January 15, 2004. LeBron was never able to play the game he loved at the professional level. He now works at a bank and cashes checks for a living. This could be a reality that we would have to face today. In fact, though it is obvious that this story is not real, it is based off of a real player’s life. Tyrone Prothro was destined to be the next hall of fame NFL player, but he got injured in college before he could make it to the pros and now works at a bank, cashing checks for a living (Travis). I believe that high school athletes should not be required by law to go to college before becoming professional athletes because of skill level, money, and injuries.…

For example the baseball player Alex Rodriguez, he was looked up to as a staple for amazing athletic feats. He broke records and inspired people while doing it. Once it was discovered that he had taken performance enhancing substances such as steroids we as a group realized that not only Alex Rodriguez, but many other players had been and were still taking steroids frequently. These individuals were people that the normal population looked up to. This comes into the points William Moller has been making, he states that we put athletes way to high which we do, but the public ignores how these amazing people that we should look up to can be set on a level too high that we ignore their faults and dishonesty to their general fan…

Teachers, principles, administrators, superintendents, and any other school dignitary’s goal are for the students to do their best at everything that they can do. How can they do that when they are denied access to a learning technique that is not cheating, not wrong or inappropriate? Listening to music while they work. “Music makes doing task easier for some people.” - Leonard Daoussis and Stuart J. Mckelvie. I am a junior at Creekview High School and I have been here for 2 years.(Ethos) I have had some teachers that let students listen to music while they work and some that have not. I have always in my opinion found that the teachers that do relate to the students more, which in turn captures the students focus, attention, and effort. All of these lead students to learn more efficiently. Learning more efficiently is one huge goal that an every educator has.(Logos) Generically students also like to think that they are independent, most of the time, if they really want to listen to music, then they are most likely going to anyway. This causes kids that are trying to work harder and learn more to get into trouble, because of a silly and stupid rule. Ask yourself, how do you feel when you listen to your favorite song? (Rhetorical Question) Now imagine if you combined that feeling with schoolwork. A lot more students would actually want to be at school, and if they want to be there, then they are going to want to give everything they have into working.(Repetition) I’m not saying that everyone will do that but because one person doesn’t focus, should that effect the futures of other students. It would be surprising to find out that under a rude, slacking, and disrespectful student could be a Straight A student if you left them alone with their work and their headphones. Kids should be allowed to do their work anyway that’s best for them to learn, which includes allowing kids to listen to music.…
