1 Introduction a The purpose of this investigation is to understand what are the color stereotypes for females, how they contrast with color stereotypes for males, how these stereotypes have come about and how they are reinforced. 2 Body 1: b discuss what is currently accepted as “femanine colors/femanine quality of colors” c lean more towards the quality of color: how the color is softer, lighter, with more variety of shade. the reason for this could be due to scientific reasons. d Femanine colors are generally seen as softer, lighter, more variety in shade. i A possible reason for this characterization could be due to how the perception of color is different for females than it is for males. females have a wider range of color perception than males. (refer to diagram) (females can more easily percieve more subtle shades of color than males can. because of this refinement these kinds of “softer colors” with “off-primary shades” are precieved as more femanine like. this scientific reason could be why colors are precieved this way. e why have these qualities been ascribed to females 3 Body 2 f Contrasting evidence also suggests that certain femanine colors are seen this way due to baby gender identification and due to advertsing g Advertising: strong evidence suggests that advertising plays a large role in determining these kinds of color stereotyping. ii show articles displaying this kind of advertising. iii explain that in the past color stereotypes were actually reversed: pink was considered a boys color and blue was considered a girl color. iv when advertisers changed their minds about this stereotyping in the 1920s people began to dress differently. This mindset has continued into today. But this change in thought suggests that advertising plays a significant role in what people consider a “boy’s color” and a “girls

    Taylor et al. mention that the most striking finding is a constant stereotypical portrayal of Asian Americans as the “all work, no play” group of people (619). They are see are the smartest group of minorities due to the stereotypes of them succeeding in math and science subjects in school. They are more likely to be seen in advertisements for technology- related products, business and technical magazines, and business settings and relationships (Taylor et al. 619). Stereotyping in advertisements and television happens to African Americans and Hispanic Americans also. This affects how others see these groups of minorities. This is also the case when it comes to characters on television shows. Mastro and Behm-Morawitz state, “race/ethnicity does, in fact, impact the manner in which characters are depicted on primetime television” (124). When creating advertisements or commercials, minorities are given roles that best “fit” with them. Most of the time they are left in the background of advertisements. When African Americans are used for actual product selling, they are rarely seen alone (and instead were accompanied by white models) (Zinkhan et al 549). As I previously stated, they are mostly in the background of the advertisements. The same goes for their speaking roles. Harold H. Kassarjian states that “Negroes are given .65 percent of the speaking roles in commercials and 1.39 percent of the nonspeaking roles” (29). They have been in advertisements alone, but they are for items that are mainly used by that group of people. For example, George M. Zinkhan, William J. Qualls, and Abhijit Biswas state that when blacks were present in product ads, they were more likely to advertise personal products (hair care) than non-personal (durable goods) (549). They are only being used for ads that best suit them, which is a form of racism and…

    The way we dress definitely plays a huge role in gender schema. When a man or a women step outside of what is viewed as their side of the spectrum, people’s perceptions are instantly changed. Colors can play a big part into this starting from when we were born. The only way we are able to identify the sex of a baby, when genitalia are not visible, is by clothing.
