Concrete Experience

The most significant experience that occurred to during the past five weeks was in the first tutorial class. This was happened on 11th of September 2012 in the class B604. I was in a class of about twenty two students. The lecturer introduced us to the subject and told us about the assessments, later she mentioned that we have to work in a team of four to five individuals who we have not met before to observe a team and present the observations within the next eleven weeks to come. At this point I was very excited to start my work.
The lecturer put me into a team of four individuals, three girls and one boy. I was the only International student in the team but we all shared the same ethnicity, we all were Chinese. Later we were asked to introduce ourselves within the team, even though I was excited at first at this point I felt very nervous but still I happily introduced myself to my team. It seemed like there was no tension among my team mates everyone was very polite and was talking well with each other.
The first task that was given to us as a team was to build a tower using straws and paperclips, the lecture mentioned that she would then choose the most creative and stable tower. Within no time one of my team mates started to make the tower, there was no discussion or allocation of task still no one argued or had opposing ideas. All the team mates accepted and agreed upon the ideas that were given out by the team mates.
My goal when building the tower was to be the most stable and creative tower among all the team, but I didn’t mention this to my team mates but half way through a team mate of mine mentioned very openly that we should somehow win this task and there onwards the goal of our team was to make the most stable and creative tower. Even though no tasks were allocated at first, half way through the tower we used all the ideas as resources to build the tower, more and more ideas were given each team mates which we selected and

The original stage of team building is the forming stage. In this stage our group was not exactly sure what this project would entail and what work was ahead of us. We were all polite and on our best behavior making contact with the rest of the group. There was a positive and high expectation that we would be successful and develop an outstanding service learning project. In this stage our roles were not clearly defined. This lead to us mostly working independently and gaining an understanding for the project and what to expect for ourselves.…

By being an effective leader, one can use effective leadership skills to implement. Such skills such as promoting cohesion is one criteria needed in this scenario. I can incorporate cohesion by showing respect to other team members, and allow everyone to be active listeners. By showing respect to one another in a team, the members can reach the unaccomplished goal set. There are different personalities and diversities in a group, but as long as you can work together despite the diversities, attitude, behaviors, competition, the goal can be completed effectively. I enjoyed the team collaboration this week. I have so much from the videos and the team input and discussion. Effective communication is needed in all areas of teams. I know that working in team can be challenging, but always remember to put your best foot forward, and keep on moving towards the goal. Sometimes, teams may not perform in adequate time but be persistent and ask if you can be of any assistance in helping other team members. Unless, there is a leader assigned, there is not an “I” in teamwork. Working the team this week was productive and I have communication was open and to the point. Everyone discussed and posted about the scenarios on both videos as…

Agreeing tasks at Blacklands farm we agreed on the tasks by communicating with each team member to get everyone’s point of view to make sure that everyone got a say in to what they thought, by doing this it meant that everyone in the team agreed on the approach to the task. Sometimes someone would disagree with an idea which could cause conflict in the group, we dealt with this by taking a vote and going with what was voted the most. When doing the bridge building challenge because my group only consisted of three people there was less conflict in the group because it was easier for us to agree on the task, it was also easier because we had a team leader so we just went along with what he said.…

However, because the communication of progress and status was done in a regular and systematic fashion, and because the team members worked well together, everyone did feel an obligation not to the let their team mates down, or to let any one player carry the weight on their own. Everyone chipped in and was committed, if not to the success of the Project, at least the success and survival of the collective. This in the end ensured the success of the Project.…

One of the problems the team encountered while following the structure of the project was the inability to coordinate the efforts equally. Since there were approximately 10 other teammates, the major obstacles were making sure each team member was equally doing the same amount of work as everyone else. And so, our team implemented a solution in order to combat this obstacle. The team members spent a good portion of time discussing how to accomplish the goals set by the team. Our team coordinated…

As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. By the time I was in 6th grade at Saint Joseph, some of my friends were planning on going to Kinard middle school in 7th grade. At this point in my life, I was not completely content with where I was going to school. The realization came to me that it was time to move on. It was time for me to try something new.…

Florida is portrayed as a fantasy land where Mickey Mouse greets you around every corner and where Cinderella actually lives, where days go by without a single drop of rain and the sky is consistently perfectly blue. However this was the farthest thing from my mind as I sat in an immense carbon-emmiting monster whose air conditioning has spluttered and died and while the heavens poured the air was so thick and mucky that flies were sticking to the windshield as we drove, only to be washed away by the drowning rain. As this was happening, my dad who was yet to figure out his left from his right had the near-miracle task of finding our hotel. Which was almost impossible because visibility was limited to about a yard and that requires great concentration, which was hard to find after the fiasco at the airport....…
