Essay On Cosmetology
Being a Cosmetologist seems simple enough, many aspiring stylists are often only mesmerized by the fashionable styles and colors but what most don’t realize is that science and cosmetology go hand in hand. There is more to hair than what meets the eye. When people look at different types of hair they tend to only see curly, kinky or straight. They lack the knowledge that it is the chemical bonds in our hair that give us our hair type. The curlier or kinkier a person’s hair is the more chemical bonds they have. If someone has straight hair and desires curly hair, then more chemical bonds would have to be created. Not only do genetics make our hair types but chemistry plays a predominate role as well. Each day many people around the world alter their hair chemically using chemical relaxers and perms. When a person with curly hair desires straight hair they get relaxers which has the key ingredient sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Sodium Hydroxide breaks down the hair bonds in textured hair with an end result of straight hair. A hair relaxer is so strong that in order to bring your hair back to a normal state of its original curliness is to cut the relaxed hair so new bonds can reform. Perms are commonly used by white women (as well as men) with straight hair. A chemical called ammonium thioglycollate which is a solution of salt, thioglycolic acid and ammonia (HSCH2COO− + NH4+ ⇌ HSCH2COOH + NH3) activates to create wave …show more content…

Bleaching, is a way to remove color by lightening the hair. Bleach reacts with the melanin to remove the color away causing an irreversible chain reaction. Although the melanin is still there the oxidized molecules are

    Why Cosmetology

Firstly, my choice to be a Cosmetologist has been an on-going interest of mine since I was about four years old. At that time , when I was four years old, I was in the bath at my Aunt Rhoda’s backwoods farm house. She had heard a gunshot , so she went to check where the gun shot had come from. When doing so , she had left her razor for shaving her legs on the bathtub shelf. I grabbed it, being the curious child I was, and shaved off my eye brow. Another reason I chose to be a Cosmetologist is because when I was about 7 years old my parents bought me tons of Barbie dolls to play with and ruin. One day when we were at Toys ‘R’ Us I saw a huge Barbie doll head without a body that you could do her hair. So as most kids my age , I begged them to buy it for me., but they ended up buying me two of them one for Christmas and one for my birthday. After I got the dolls I played with them almost every day and attempted to braid their hair. I also washed their hair when I was in the bath tub. That is one reason why I chose to be in Cosmetology at ICTC.…

Because curly hair has a tendency to be dryer, more brittle and prone to frizz it requires more careful treatment than straight hair to keep it looking its best. First let’s find out what makes hair curly in the first place. There is more than one school of thought on this subject. Some hair scholars believe whether your hair is straight or curly depends on the shape of the hair shaft, which is determined by the shape of the hair follicle. A cross section view of a straight hair would appear round, while a similar view of a curly hair would appear oval. This shape is determined by a genetic pre-disposition. Others believe that hair is curly or straight, depending upon the number of disulfide bonds between hair proteins found in the hair shaft. The idea is that the greater the number of links between sulphur atoms, the curlier the hair, conversely, the fewer the number of links, the straighter the hair. I think both opinions are correct. The shape of the follicle would account for the curl, and the higher number of disulfide bonds also known as sulphur bonds would account for its dry, brittle texture.…
