Effects of Tourism on Employment in Madhya Pradesh

Abstract
Tourism today is the most vibrant tertiary activity and a multi-billion industry in India as well as in Madhya Pradesh. Traditionally known largely for its historical and cultural dimensions, tourism today is highlighted for its immense employment opportunities. With its lucrative linkages with transport, hotel industry etc., the potential and performance of Madhya Pradesh’s tourism industry needs to be gauged in terms of its socio-economic magnitudes. This paper traces the progress made by State’s tourism industry in the Employment era.

Introduction

With one foot grounded in time-honoured traditions and the other fervently striding into the entrepreneurial e-age, India embraces diversity as passionately as few other countries on earth could. Tourism is concerned with pleasure, holiday travel and going or arriving somewhere. It acts as a social and cultural linkage by providing a number of amenities whose range extends from hotels, motels and best transport network. All those activities which cater to the demands of tourists with available resources can be termed as tourism system. In order to understand tourism activity an analytical system has been devised to provide a broad basis for understanding the phenomena. It is as an industry has influenced various segments of economic development of the region through multiplier effect. It includes hotels, motels, restaurants, transport, shopping, entertainment and other allied economic activities including export of handicrafts, paintings, jewellery and wooden articles. The economic significance of tourism can be studied in relocation to its contribution to increased foreign exchange earning, conservation of resources, utilization of wastelands, increase in employment opportunities and income of local people.

Tourism in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is India’s second largest state which occupies 9.38% of the country areas. Madhya Pradesh has 3 world heritage sites-Khajuraho, Bhimbethtka and Sanchi as well as 9 National Parks and 25 conserving areas. Madhya Pradesh has a vivid Kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent historical, archaeological sites and royal cities, mystery mountains retreats, rivers & lakes and the vast natural heritage. The rapid growth of tourism during the last three decades in Madhya Pradesh has made an impact not only on the economy of the State but also on its environment. Keeping in view with much of the process of socio-economic development, its impact produces both problems and opportunities on a large scale. The organization for Economic-Co-operation and development has said aptly, that a high quality environment is essential for tourism. On the other hand the quality of environment is threatened by tourism development itself, which is promoted because of its economic importance. Tourism also plays a highly important role in creating jobs and generating wealth throughout the economy. Present work is an attempt to show the academic world how tourism can be used as a tool for socio-economic growth if the efforts are directed correctly. Madhya Pradesh has a vivid Kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent historical, archaeological sites and royal cities, mystery mountains retreats, rivers & lakes and the vast natural heritage.
