Communication is an important part of working with people. The way we communicate demonstrates understanding, respect and empathy toward clients. Effective communication allows for an understanding of the client’s situation. When we communicate understanding we can reflect back a client’s statement, which allows the client to know the social worker has an understanding about their situation. Micro processing allows for better understanding for treatment planning and defining goals. When a social worker understands a client’s situation they are more apt to write goals that are attainable. When we communicate effectively with clients it allows for the client to get a better understanding of the social worker. This helps with establishing rapport between the client and the social worker. A client will not have successful outcomes if they do not have a rapport with their social worker. If rapport is not effectively established, clients are less like to communicate honestly and openly. Effective communication and rapport building allows for clients to provide accurate information, and define clear measurable, attainable goals.
