Effect of Sugar on Bean Plant Growth
Abstract
The objective: My project was to determine if bean plants grew stronger and healthier by the addition of the right amount of sugar to their watering. I believe that plants that receive 50 grams of sugar per liter of water would help bean plants grow to be stronger, healthier and larger because they would get energy from the sugar.
Methods/Materials
36 bean plants were grown in potting soil. The same amount of soil was used in each pot and it had no added nutrients. The plants were grown under 24 hour light, for the same length of time. They were watered everyday with 22.18 milliliters of water. The amount of sugar in the water was either: no sugar, (control), 25 grams of sugar per liter of water, 50 grams of sugar per liter of water or 75 grams of sugar per liter of water. The plants grew for 28 days. Each plant was removed gently from the pot, rinsed in water, and measured. The roots and the plant itself were measured separately.
Results
The plants with watered with 50 grams of sugar per liter of water were the strongest, healthiest and the largest. This was determined by measurement and visual inspection.
Conclusions/Discussion
The plants with watered with 50 grams of sugar per liter of water were the strongest, healthiest and the largest. This was determined by measurement and visual inspection.
The project determined whether sugar effected bean plant growth.

    This experiment had the purpose of testing temperature for bean and pea seed germination. 100 beans were taken and split into four groups of 25. Each Group of 25 beans was folded inside a damp paper towel. Two of the damp paper towels, with the beans inside, were put in a plastic bag and then moved to a warm place and the other two paper towels were put in a plastic bag and then moved to a cold room. The same process was repeated for the peas. It was hypothesized that the beans and peas that were put in the warm room would germinate fastest. When the seeds were taken out of the rooms for examination one week later all 25 of the beans that were in the warm room, in both rep one and rep two had germinated. As for the peas in the warm room, 15 of the 25 peas had germinated in rep one and in rep two 8 of the 25 peas had germinated. None of the beans and peas in the cold room had germinated at all in the first week. The second week the remaining 7 peas for rep one in the warm room had germinated and the remaining 10 peas from rep two in the warm room had germinated. In the cold room for the second week none of the beans had germinated. All 25 of the peas in the cold room, in reps one and two finally germinated in week two. The data shows that beans germinate in a warm room and peas tolerate warm temperatures, but germinate best in colder temperatures.     The lima beans with more calcium added also germinated quicker than the ones with minimal amounts or no calcium at all. The data recorded supports the hypothesis that if calcium is added in greater amounts, that the lima beans will grow taller and healthier. The plants in groups 4 and 5 grew much quicker and faster than all 3 of the other groups. The lima beans in groups 4 and 5 germinated in the second day while the 3 other groups took 3 days to germinate and sprout. The total amount each plant grew in the different groups is directly correlated with the amount of calcium added to each group of plants because certain variables were kept constant to ensure that each plant had the same environment. The benefits of calcium in plant growth are numerous. Calcium helps in the metabolic uptake of nutrients vital to plant growth. It also helps in creating a strong cell wall and membrane in the plant’s cells which help in fighting against diseases and fungi’s. For these reasons and more, that is why calcium plays such a big role in plant growth. The results are noticeably different and show clearly that calcium aids in lima bean growth. A few flaws in my experiments design were that the scale was not a .001 accuracy scale which means that the amount of calcium added could have been less accurate than possible.     The question being asked here would be “Does a plant grow bigger if watered with milk? Or water?” In my opinion the answer would be milk because milk contains vitamins and calcium that water does not have, but the answer is to be found out later during the project. Well, it is known that for a plant to survive it will definitely need air, soil, water, light, and space to grow, but maybe if we replaced water with milk, plants could grow bigger and quicker, you never know.
