This method uses patient feedback to repeat what they have been taught so that the nurse can assess the patient’s level of understanding of the material. This method is non-confrontational and does not embarrass the patient if they are not sure of what was taught. This is a very effective way for the nurse to evaluate if their chosen teaching method was successful.…
Daniel Hale Williams lead the way for diversity in health care. Born on January 18th, 1856, in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Williams was the fifth of seven children, born to Daniel and Sarah Williams (Gordon 1). After the late Daniel died, Williams was sent to live with friends and family in Baltimore, Maryland. Williams started there as a shoemaker’s apprentice, but later decided that line of work was not for him (PBS). Williams then decided to move to Illinois to be with family, and pursue his education (Gordon 1)…
The plan of this paper is to assess what the patient knows/thinks he knows about his condition, determine if he has any barriers to learning, and analyze his willingness/motivational level to overall learn.…
All written information could be prepared at a reading level appropriate for the general population. New packages for patient information prior to their first clinic visit could be very useful to them. Where there are language barriers, demonstrations could be effective teaching strategy if appropriate for the situation. Using multiple teaching strategies is a good option for patient education. Pictures and illustrations are also useful for enhancing printed materials for patients with low literacy skills. However, the illustrations should be non-ambiguous and should also be accompanied by a text written in simple language (Friedman, Boyko, Cosby, Hatton-Bauer, & Turnbull,…
The term Diversity means difference. When we use diversity as a contrast or an addition to equality it is then about recognising individual as well as group differences. Treating people as individuals and placing positive values on diversity in the community & workplace. During a clinical rotation we come into contact with many patients, from many different backgrounds, with many different disease processes which effect their systems. Each patient has their own manifestations, of signs and symptoms, along with courses of action which are taken to best meet their individual needs. One of the tools used when caring for a patient is education. CDC.gov states “A well-informed patient is more likely to cooperate if the patient understands” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Educating a patient allows a patient to be more involved in their care, and there is a greater possibility for compliance once the…

Similar to the smiles of kids in Mexico I helped create, I saw my patients' smiles every time I greeted them and spent that two extra minutes educating them about their condition. My experience in educating others has been a useful tool when interacting with patients during medical school. The importance of patient education, empowerment and guidance is critical in…

The United States is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world. Many people of different customs and religions share the same space. Yet, the healthcare workforce does not represent the nation’s diverse population. Physician Assistant (PA), specifically, still remains predominantly white. According to the 2013 annual report from the National Commission on Certification of PAs, 85.6% of certified PAs indicated they were white. Given that diversity matters to healthcare and treatment of patients, many minority groups still experience health disparities despite the overall improvement in the healthcare system. Being an American of Vietnamese descent, I want to be a part of the nation’s movement in making PA become…
