Detrimental Habits Research Paper
Everyone has had good and stressful times throughout their lives. It is imperative to learn from the mistakes that are made when going through a rough phase in life, as this will help frame and reveal our true characters. One of my biggest failures was adopting habits from negative influences around me. I have since then learned from my mistakes and I plan on using this experience to prevent any other similar scenarios. Detrimental habits are often passed on from person to person. This is why if people hang out in a positive crowd, they will have a positive way of thinking. I made the mistake of hanging out with the wrong crowd during my freshman year in high school. This negative influence cost me the trust of my family and my close friends.

Bad habits can range from biting your nails, to smoking so there are quite a lot of negative tendencies people can have. One particular example of this is shown in the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber. Mitty’s habit is daydreaming. His vivid daydreams nearly cause him physical harm at two points in the story. The first instance is when his daydream happens behind the wheel of his car. If his wife had not snapped him out of it by saying “Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!” (Thurber 1), then he could have been in an accident. The second instance is once again when he is behind the wheel of his car, but this time he almost hit another car. This time, he is brought out of his dream by a parking attendant shouting “Look out for that Buick!” (Thurber 2). There are many habits that people have that cause affect them negatively. It is a part of a person’s identity that can directly harm them. Some are severe and some are not as severe, yet they still negatively impact the…

It is common to appreciate how people become pessimist and often depressive when adversity meet their lives. Failures should be sought after and not be concealed by our own ego; in fact, Thoreau, upon reflecting his future death, realized how he did not wish to be confined. In my own experience, I have also discovered this idea and the knowledge dawns on me whenever I reflect upon myself, while underneath the celestial night sky. The discovery was early on in my life, around 15, that I learnt to search for my own failures and not ignore them, but encourage them. Nevertheless, this may seem like an exhausting way of life, granted it has worn itself on me a few times, however it eventually grows to be looked at as an embarrassing starting point of an ability or perspective, which later can grow to a substantive experience.…

Failure is not something an individual can avoid. We all make mistakes because we are imperfect. Thus, we need to look at ways that help us overcome a situation we had failed at. According to “Rich in Thought: Not every Olympian Gets a Medal” by Richard Paloma, he states,” Mistakes are tools for learning- not indicators of poor ability” (paragraph 7). Whether it’s losing a soccer game, failing a test, or coming last in a race we all have failures. Three ways that I have made a mistake, but learned from it are failure’s on a school history final, the loss of my soccer game, and stealing from Target.…

Failure is something that we cannot go through life without experiencing. The best thing about failure is that failure can be used as a great learning experience to improve upon things in our lives and career. Using failure as a learning tool is dependent upon the person and how they view it as well as how they use it. Failure is a matter of perspective and the lessons in failure are important aspects towards growth and development. If we did not experience failure there wouldn’t be opportunities for learning. Failure can teach us about ourselves as well as provide an understanding for our strengths and weaknesses and even provide motivation (Mindtools.com, 2012).…

This was my first true failure and I gleaned insight I could have never gotten anywhere else. Foremost, I learned I wasn’t invincible. I was no impenetrable fortress incapable of collapse. I crumbled into a disoriented mess with one sentence. After the collapse, I learned how to rebuild myself and move forward. That was monumental in growing as a person as it gave me the experience to deal with future failures. In a similar fashion, I learned that failure is always an option.…

Even though I have had many negative influences in my life, I tend to focus on the lessons it taught me instead of the hardship. My mother always looked at me as a failure and never had any high expectations from me, and so that made life much harder for me as well. She taught me that by hurting people, you gain respect. My culture and background plays a huge part in who I am today and I take nothing nor any experience for granted. As an adult I learned how to control my anger in a lot of ways by keeping myself around positive energy, church, my family, and understanding that I cannot be bitter or stress over things from my past that I cannot change.…
