Dannha's Case Study: ADHD Behavior
Last week during one of the IR&S team meetings, we were presented with one of the cases that got us all concern. Dannha a first grade student who is presents oppositional defiant characteristics as well as ADHD behavior was not being accommodated due to the school lock of persistence in this case. The student had being acting in ways that put the school, the staff as well as other students in jeopardy. The teacher is frustrated due to the fact that Dannha is doing things such as taking things away from other students, taking their personal items and given it to other students, creating chaos in the classroom. The student is not respecting others. She is taking advantage of other students, taking their costumes from them and erasing mom’s permission …show more content…

After learning the outcome of this case and the different things and strategies that the teacher is following such as:
Chunking the information, modifying the tasks as well as creating behavioral charts in order to encourage student to actively participate in class as well as producing and getting engage in the task, the student is not responding positively to any of the action plans, as well as to the strategies. Student needs constant attention and when she does not get it, she finds ways to get it, such as taking things away from others, irritating others by teasing them or telling on them.
This case is very challenging. The teacher is not getting the support that she needs and the student is not responding to the interventions. While reflecting on this case, it came to me that the best thing that we can do in cases like this, the school needs to be more imperative. We need to give the teacher more support, find ways to give the student more intervention programs. Perhaps designed an extended learning program for the student, not only for academic purposes but also to teach her how to make the correct choices and learning about rituals, routines and

    My reflections on this case involve the actions of Mark Siegel, teacher and Ms. Petersen, parent. It seems to me that Mr. Siegel has not set up a partnership with his parents at the start of the school. I believe that teaching/learning involves partnering of all parties involved, teacher, student and parents.     I selected my student from one of my students that I viewed to have some of the worst behavior in the class. I am at Bond Elementary School which is an intercity school. Most of the school’s student population comes from subsidized housing (the projects). I am in a first grade class of nineteen students. While performing my duties at in Mrs. J Williams Classroom I became very eager to observe as well as work with a student by the name of Ja’Von W. Ja’Von is a six year old, I recently found out that his mother is on drugs and is being supported by his sixteen year old brother. Many of the students that I have observed in the classroom have had behavior problems and issues with their academics especially reading, but Ja’Von seemed to stick out more than the other students did. While the other students would be engaging in reading activities, Ja’Von would constantly disrupt other students that were engaged in their reading lessons. He also seemed to have issues with their cooperating teacher Mrs. J. Williams. During a conversation with Mrs. J. Williams she noted that this was a frequent and on going thing with this particular student. When I decided to work with Ja’Von, one of the first activities that I wanted to engage in was her reading aloud to me. It dawned on me that the student’s behavior problem was his difficulty to read. Ja’Von was missing the basic skills that she needed in order to read with fluency as well as read with understanding.     This article introduced me to cognitive-enhancers, or medicines that cause the “pharmaceutical enhancement of our cognitive skill set, whether of memory, our ability to focus, or the speed with which we process information” (1).     Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, is becoming more and more popular in today’s society. There are many definitions and theories as to what ADHD really is, well here are the symptoms included in this disorder. Inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are the three present symptoms of ADHD. When the child seems easily distracted or has trouble following rules or tasks, this is where we see the inattention symptom come into play. Children also seem to be forgetful and very unorganized as this symptom progresses. Impulsivity is the second symptom and this includes acting before thinking things through and cannot help but to interrupt class discussions or any conversation.     ADHD is real in the view of many scientific researchers and families. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is the most commonly reported childhood behavioral disorder, affecting between 3 and 7% of American children. It is characterized by poor attention span, impulsive behaviors, and hyperactivity in some children. The diagnostic criteria are strictly observational, and there are no objective laboratory tests to confirm that diagnosis. Subjective evaluations of annoying, distracting, or inattentive behavior make the “diagnosis” of ADD/ADHD speculative at best. It inhibits a person's ability to stay on a task and to exercise age-appropriate decisions.
