Culture Report #1
Cultural Event Report
You must fill this report only if the cultural event is not a film. There is a different report for movies.
Name and class: Name
Name of event: Visit to the Amish of Jamesport
Place, date, time:
Which new culture did you learn about? The Amish of Jamesport, MO
Summarize the event in two sentences: I was immersed in the Amish lifestyle for a whole day. I was able to experience what their lives are like on a day to day basis: work, school, chores, meals, prayer, and song.
Answer the following questions:
• What did you learn by attending this cultural experience? I learned about how the Amish live their lives, how they are able to keep the influences of the “English” culture out.
• What was new to you? The way they dress, their native language being Pennsylvania Dutch or high German, the simplicity of their lives.
• Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? Very much! It was very nice to experience their way of life and see that things can be done simply, but nice to come home to technology as well!
• What did it remind you of in your own culture or life experience? Could you contrast your culture and the foreign culture based on something you learned from this event? There was very little that reminded me of my own culture…the way they live their lives is so much different. Much simpler than our hectic technology driven lives. Cultural Event Report

When we think of the Amish we think of an old-timey lifestyle of hard labor and strong values. This documentary shows the other side that is kept secret. It shows girls dressed in their traditional dresses and white bonnets chugging beers and dancing. It shows boys dressed in “English” (how they refer to non-Amish Americans) clothing. It even shows the Amish teens in bed together.…

The main point of this video was to show how the lives of Amish teens are changed drastically when between the ages of 16 and 21 they are faced with a whole new lifestyle. This then leads them to face a very difficult decision. Durring the ages of 16 and 21, Amish teens are 'let lose' or able to live the life that English children live. They can move out, get their license, wear normal clothes and party on a regular basis. Then after this is over with they must make their decision, they can either continue to live the life of an English person and basically be free, or they can join the church and give their lives to God and the Amish ways. When these kids were allowed to be free they seemed to chose the wrong road, many following the path of drugs and alcohol. They weren't just messing around with common drugs either, they were actually…

Throughout the week, I interacted with many aspects of island life and ecology. We were exposed to the harsh reality of the island. The inhabitants were impoverished. In communicating with the residents, I found that they were satisfied with their life and find happiness. At the camp, we participated in a gonolithian lab, which included sorting out…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

Knowledge is infinite so although it is my culture I can always learn new information. I am fascinated with my culture because although we were suppressed we still overcame. It is amazing to know that we were once not even included in the Constitution or allowed to vote and now we have Barrack Obama who is of African descent running for president. I used this museum trip not only as a means for getting information for this report but as a way to connect the past with the present. The museum was very successful at displaying the culture positively. Everything seemed chronological and there was a vast selection of…

Now that I've tried to define culture I want to try to show its importance. By defining culture as the way a collected group of people interpret symbols one must try to give an example of these symbols. Cultural symbols are essentially anything that is thought of as unique to a group people; however, it really could be anything such as a house, car, clothes, but also street signs, telephones, television, and radio. These cultural "symbols" are everywhere and usually we aren't even aware that they are symbols of and to our culture.…
