I want you to do something for me, I want you to think of your parents, now in the same thought put yourself in the picture. Now think, what have you inherited from your parents, is it just their physical appearance or is it also their way of thinking. What if I were to tell you, that it is something much more, that each and every one of us, has inherited our parent’s sense of belonging or not belonging, and then developed it. Forces both external and internal shape our identity. The people that form our families, the friends that surround us and the positions we occupy in society, are all links that together form our belonging in this world. Belonging is important in Romulus My Father by Raimond Giata and Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger as they both show that fitting into a group is integral to human existence and brings more meaning to one’s life.…

A great 18th century poet from Great Britain Alfred Tennyson stated “I am a part of all that I have met”. There are a number of concepts of belonging and not belonging which can be altered by relations or connections to places wether you are not accepted or accepted in your hometown. Having that sense of belonging which individuals aspire to can build a strong positive bond with their hometown and find it easy to enhance relationships between other individuals, however conforming to abundant laws and receiving abuse within the family can develop a feeble connection to your home or the community resulting in alienation and departing away. In the verse-novel The Simple Gift by Steven Herrick we witness the notions of belonging and not belonging which are acceptance and non acceptance influenced by links to vicinities through the main character Billy. In the picture book The Island by Armin Greder we visualise the negative notions of belonging which is exclusion and non acceptance. Both these authors enhance the perception of belonging and not belonging in the text through strong and powerful language techniques such as metaphors, simile and symbolism.…

To a large extent external forces will influence an individual’s sense of belonging, however to a small extent internal forces also have an impact. This is reflected in the prescribed text “The Simple Gift” by Steven Herrick and the related texts, “Minority” by Green-day, and “Happy Feet” by George Miller. All these texts demonstrate both negative and positive experiences of belonging through the use of various methods and factors. External factors affecting an individual’s sense of belonging may include, people, society and the environment they are brought up in. However an individual may choose to not belong anywhere due to factors within themselves.…

Everyone has their own story to tell in regards to people or events that have shaped their identity. Mary Gordon puts these sentiments to paper in her writing' More Than Just a Shrine: Paying Homage to the Ghosts of Ellis Island', an essay reflecting on her 'search for self' through exploration of her ancestors' immigration to the US. She tells us, for example, "The minute I set foot upon the island I could feel all that it stood for: insecurity, obedience, anxiety, dehumanization, the terrified and careful deference of the displaced" (Gordon 409). Gordon's ability to come to terms with the unsettling truths about what her ancestors were forced to experience, essentially being dehumanized, is quite an inspiration. In reading her passage, I was able to conjure up some personal thoughts relating to the formation of my identity. My step mom, whom I have known for 1/3 of my life, has probably given me more insight on how to lead my life successfully and be a good daughter, friend, sister than anyone has over my 18 years.…

    identity and belong

One of the paradoxes of our identity is the fact that belonging to a group can operate both positively and negatively in our quest to define our selves. In My Place Sally Morgan experiences something of this duality in relation to her Aboriginality. In belonging to a group we can develop a sense of ‘us’ and ‘them’ that helps us define who and what we are by knowing what and who we are not. In being part of a group we satisfy our needs for belonging, acceptance and approval. However in order to maintain our position in the group we often have to put individual needs second and put the needs of the group ahead of our own interests. We move from ‘me’ to ‘us’. Problems arise when our sense of being an individual is trapped by the group. Sometimes our fear of rejection from the group stops us from saying what we really feel and think. We can end up acting in ways that are contrary to what we understand as our ‘true selves’.Some scientists and social researchers think that people behave as they do according to their genetic makeup (nature). Those who are opposed to this stance fear that genetic arguments may come to be used to excuse criminality: ‘I’m a murderer because of my genes’. Others believe that people think and behave in certain ways because they are taught to do so (nurture). This is particularly pronounced in Witness, where the contrasting values in the worlds of John Book and the Amish illustrate the impact of nurture on a person’s beliefs and subsequent actions. Bruce Dawe addresses the issue of cultural influence in the formation of identity in many of his poems in Sometimes Gladness. Those who subscribe to the nurture view see the process of socialisation as the primary influence in an individual’s life:…
