On March 21 2013 after my classes and I got there on time for the court session at 11:00 a.m. It was my first time entering court, the security was very strict, they looked through my purse and made me take everything out of my pockets. After the security check I started looking for courtrooms with trials going on I entered a very interesting Courtroom 10 on the 6th floor. There was many people waiting in that courtroom including attorneys, but the attorneys were standing by the defendants. The trail was open to the public’ the crown stated the facts about the ( ) this wasn’t a jury trail the judge made the decision.
As the Crown sated the facts, the Accused was arrested in September 13, 2011 for distribution of narcotics and prohibited firearms position. Courtroom trials are very interesting to me and I really enjoyed clerking for judges and being able to watch everything from beginning to end. The case I have chosen is a jury trial and that jury ends up being seven women and five men. The criminal laws that were violated were many starting with Child Neglect, making false official statements and obstructing an investigation. Forging checks, fraudulent use of identification and petty theft, first degree murder, aggravated child abuse aggravated manslaughter and four counts of lying to law enforcement. Heading the prosecution was the District Attorney of Orange County Florida with several of the Assistant District Attorney’s. The defense has Jose Baez and what they were calling a ‘team’ of defense counsel, which actually ended up only being 3. Judge Belvin Perry was on the bench and all of the witnesses that were on both the states list of witnesses to call but the defense as well. The outcome of this trial rocked the nation as the verdict was read live which were Not Guilty of Aggravated Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse and Aggravated Manslaughter. The defendant was found guilty on 4 counts of the forgery of checks and was credited for time served, then released from jail.…

    Court House Assignment

On October 26th 2012 at approximately 9:30, I walked through the doors of the Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket located at 50 Eagle Street West with another fellow classmate. Upon arriving to the court house I wasn’t one hundred percent sure what I would witness. Walking through the big doors, there’s security with metal detectors, then again this is a court house and they have to provide as much security as possible to ensure that everyone is safe. After roaming around for a little bit of time, we decided that we should find a room to witness a trial in. It was around 10:00 that Kristal and I entered room 203 of the court house. The accused was Rohan Roberts and he was facing the charges of assault, possession of a controlled substance and theft under $5000. What had happened was Mr.Roberts was at the LCBO purchasing alcohol where he apparently tried to steal a bottle, when approached by a peace officer that works for the store he allegedly assaulted her by pushing her away. The accused was almost the same age as me just a year older or so but to see something facing charges such as that is ridiculous, then again there has been a person younger that has committed even worse crimes and have charges on them that you wouldn’t even believe. In this case I would have thought that the judge would be hard on Mr. Roberts for what he was being charged with but instead he was given a full disclosure. They did not want to charge him so they gave him the option of diversion to where he was sentenced to complete thirty hours of community service and to attend a drug and alcohol awareness course and the charges would be dropped. In my eyes he was lucky enough to be given a second option and not face those charges because any type of charges would look bad on a person especially at such a young age. My thoughts of a court house overall is I was blown away by how busy the court house is and knowing that it’s like this every day is unbelievable. I don’t think there would be…

Courts in the United States have a tremendous task of setting the standard for justice in America. To some, this task may be considered easy but there are those that understand that this job comes with an extreme challenge. Compound the rise in crime, budget issues and language barriers and one can see that the court systems are held together by a loose piece of thread. This paper however will focus on one of the several challenges that the criminal justice system faces regarding language interpretation while giving an in depth evaluation of victims’ rights and the impact it has made in court.…

The Supreme Court's annual term begins in October. Five justices constitute a quorum to hear a case, and decision is rendered by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the previous judgment is affirmed. Under the Judiciary Law, cases are brought to the court by appeal or by writ of certiorari. Nine judges sit on the Court: the chief justice of the United States and eight associate justices. The president of the United States appoints them to the Court for life terms, but the U.S. Senate must approve each appointment with a majority vote. The Supreme Court wields complete authority over the federal courts, but it has only limited power over state courts. The Court has the final word on cases heard by federal courts, and it writes procedures that these courts must follow. The Supreme Court's interpretations of federal law and the Constitution also apply to the state courts, but the Court cannot interpret state law or issues arising under state constitutions, and it does not supervise state court operations.…

As many know, Senior Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ken.) has launched a blockade on Obama's Supreme Court nominee (Merrick Garland) in order to prevent Democratic control of the organization. While many view McConnell's strategy as an ignorant schism, his plan has many policy implications following last night's election results (Liptak). With Republican control over both the Presidency and Congress, the party will be eligible to appoint multiple Supreme Court justices. Thus, changing the entire political spectrum of the country. A Republican dominated Supreme Court means more conservative decisions on controversial issues including gay marriage, abortion, and the second amendment.…

This is one of the very few field trips that I am really excited about! Lately, I have been thinking about being a lawyer when I grow up. I am not that sure if being a lawyer is something that I really want to do, but this trip will help know a little bit more and will help me experience how it will be like. I think that this would be a great experience for me. I would love to see an actual court case in action. I would be able to see a plaintiff attorney and defendant attorney doing their job in a real trial. I really like to argue and defend by end of the case that’s why I think being a lawyer is something that I want to be!…

My court case observation was interesting, to say the least. I walked into the DeKalb county courthouse, in Auburn, Indiana, not knowing where to go, what to say or do, or even how to dress. By the time I left, I had learned far more than I planned on, and not just through observing . . . I sat in on three trials: two civil cases and one criminal case. Afterwards, I had the unique opportunity to talk with the judge and county bailiff for about half of an hour.…

My first visit to court proved to be an exciting and tiring hunt for the right courtroom that would admit and let in spectators. And later, a highly edifying two hours. After combing through all the staff and court rooms in all the levels in the Hall of Justice in QC and being spooked by the detainees in yellow who to me seemed like barbarians, we finally found one. About time. The hearing, which turned out to ex parte, had only just begun.…
