Community Service Paper
Vincent Hornberger 6/1/12
Religion Community Service
For my community service I had done a variety of jobs. All of them have definitely helped out my community greatly though. Doing these hours has also changed me spiritually and helped me become closer to God because most of my jobs have been for charity. The following will be a list of jobs that I have done and what I had to do during them.
My first job was working the Halloween party and that was a very fun job. The only thing that I had to do was instruct people on jumping into a pit full of bubble wrap. Also, I had to just hand out candy to “trick or treaters” the came down the hallway of the school. The second job I did was work the spaghetti dinner. This job was also very simple and only had me wait tables, which meant I had to bring out spaghetti, drinks, and silverware to the customers. The third job that I had done was doing Fill the Boot. This job was very interesting, because it was something I had never done before. What I had to do was stand in the middle of the street collecting money for a disease called MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). My last and final job I had done is one Christmas Eve every year. I go with my family to HSBC Arena, fill up bags full of food, and bring it to families that are less fortunate than me, with the Buffalo Police.
In conclusion I definitely would say I do a variety of jobs to complete my 10 hours. My favorite job I would say by far though is the police food donating job. It’s just so enlightening to see the smile on the families faces. Some people even cry. The community service definitely changes me for the

My first job was as a sales person of eye glasses at a Christmas fair. I was hired for one month with no day off to sell glasses during the month of December for a small retailer. I was responsible for the eye glasses to be displayed and clean, and sell them. It was not easy because I had to wake up early, open the shop; and my day finished at 8-9 pm when the store closed. It was a very busy time of the year. It was a very hard one month but there was nothing more satisfying then the first pay check, then I knew I did a good job. There is no embarrassing job if you learn to do it with pride and respect.…

The best job I had was working at Gila River casino. I worked the night shift from 10pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday, working 40 hours a week. Working as a security officer the casino was very hard and fast-paced because for security we would have to make sure everyone was safe, check i.d., and walk around the casino floor to see if anyone was stealing money or people sleeping in the bathroom. We would have to check the parking lot for anyone who was doing drugs and trying to break into patrons vehicles. The biggest problems at the casino were the alcohol intoxicated patrons who would get mad and want to fight everyone in the casino.…

Giving (verb): to freely transfer the possession of (something) to (someone); hand over to. When one gives to someone or does something special for someone, it is a win-win situation. In fact, the feeling of happiness is always mutual in those cases. No matter how big, small, concrete, or abstract the act of kindness is, it will go a long way nevertheless. The winter season - that is, the season for giving - is approaching, and it is a great time to “kick off” the amiable gestures for family and friends now. For me, personally, I would like to help cook a tasty dessert for my family to marvel over.…

Cheating is the most pathetic thing someone can possibly do. Cheating is basically an easy way out without putting the effort. Cheating isn’t fair to people who work hard. For the month of September, I completed my community service by being a SPO, or a Safety Patrol Officer for Achieve Charter Academy. Ms. Fuller was the dean directing the Safety Patrol program. After going through training, I started arriving to school early on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, starting on the 21st of September. I had to be in school by seven forty in the morning; I’d put my books in my locker, sign in at Ms. Fuller’s office, get my belt on, and be out at my post by a quarter until eight. My shift ended at ten past eight. While doing this, I completed a total of one hundred twenty minutes, or two hours, of community service for my school.…

A work as a courtesy clerk for Hy-Vee after my classes and on the weekends. I have worked there for over two years and transferred last semester so that I could attend college in the Ankeny area. Because I do around five to six classes a semester I always have to be careful about the amount of hours that I take on. Sometimes my shifts can be around twenty hours and week which, coupled with all the schoolwork that I do, can be taxing at times. Because of the fact that I live on campus, the location of my work is very important and was a defining reason of why I decided to transfer to the Hy-Vee on South West State Street.…

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people. Other duties included clearing dishes, socializing with others, setting up and serving food and drinks. Lastly, I also participated in the Walk Against Male Violence in which I was required to raise money and walk the 5 Kilometers as a method of raising awareness and money for abused women.…

I have worked in several different types of establishments since high school. I have worked in a restaurant, Krispy Kreme, LA Fitness, a daycare, and a few retail jobs. Nothing is as stressful as retail. I worked on the assembly line at Krispy Kreme packaging and watching the donuts come out; sometimes I had to do everything on my own until someone else comes in to help. I looked like Lucy from the “I Love Lucy show” when she worked in the chocolate factory, she wasn’t able to keep up with the conveyer belt so she started stuffing chocolates in her clothes to hide them from her supervisor so she wouldn’t get into trouble. It was a pretty funny sight when I first started working at Krispy Kreme, most of the donuts fell into the trash can but I didn’t get into trouble.…
