There are several factors that contribute to me wanting to be a Community Assistant. One is that a goal of mine has been to forever influence Barrett. I believe that through the Barrett Residential Council and becoming a Community Assistant; I will achieve this goal. I also want to be a Barrett Community Assistant because of Kylie Kilian and James Orr (the CA’s of Agave 1), who have helped me transition into the collegiate environment. They are two of the kindest, most helpful people I know of, and if I am even a fraction of the CA’s that they are there would be no issues! However, I have chosen to apply of my own volition; due to me being qualified for the role of a CA, as well as taking on the job as a challenge to be a positive impact in people’s lives. There are three traits that are essential to be a Community Assistant that I have. First, I am a strong believer in helping those around me in times of distress. Secondly, I have always thrived in a leadership position and being an influence on the incoming class would be a wonderful adventure. Finally, I am willing…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

Post-secondary institutions are not easy, and they are not meant to be so. A large problem is that a lot of kids are pressured into going to college by their families, society, or their school. Not everybody is cut out for college, and it really just is not the right path in life for some people, which means that these “unfit” students are going to be more likely to cheat in order to satisfy themselves or anybody else. On the other hand, students that are completely prepared for college and maybe have done well their whole academic careers, still hold the possibility to break the honor code. Students are pushed within their own minds to cheat and share work so they do not have to try as hard, but still receive high grades. What they do not realize is that cheating really is not helping them in the long run. Of course, some students do have their time very well-managed, and can handle the stress, but others get stressed and break down very easily. College is known to have a rough transition from high school as far as the workload, increased pressure to do well, and the unfamiliar environment. These aspects of college can make it very stressful, and make some of the best students at least contemplate cheating, and breaking their institution’s honor code if there is one. If students get into the bad habit of cheating and dishonesty during their school years, this is…

One of them, as suggested by Peter Cove of the New York Daily News, is increasing work. He suggests that work is the only answer to poverty. Peter Cove suggests that work is the optimal solution because it maximises a person’s capacity to achieve economic self-reliance. He says that work socialises people and instills a sense of personal responsibility in people. Having a job connects behaviour with consequences and permits people to earn the admiration and respect of their spouses and children by supporting them. None of this is accomplished by handouts or by government-run programs. Peter provides us the fact that America spends over $600 billion a year on welfare and poverty-related programs. And these programmes do not work. They seem to do the opposite of what they are actually supposed to do —They create, rather than lessen, dependency. “For just $155 billion, we could establish a proven, subsidised employment program in the private sector and Works Progress Administration-type effort that would employ 11 million dependent individuals. These jobs could pay a salary of $20,000, lifting millions of families out of poverty” says…

Volunteering is similar to work but very different. This is because in volunteering the person does not receive a paycheck to accomplish the work that is needed to be done. The similarity is that an action is taking place no matter if you get paid or not. Many organizations even individuals need help. There are volunteer jobs that just require you to have genuine empathy for those in need. For example, New Orleans is in need of volunteers because of what happened with Hurricane Katrina. Many things were destroyed and many people died, but they are rebuilding and hopefully within time they will succeed in rebuilding. It is not just the rebuilding that needs to be done. Volunteering leaves the individual with a comforting satisfaction that they helped those in need. Unfortunately, not every one can do…
