Directions: Think of a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating with someone else at work, home, or school. Then fill in the blanks of the chart below. Who was the sender? I was the sender.|  |

What was the message? The message was about a computer that we owned.|  | What channel was used to send the message? I informed my wife I did not want my kids to use the computer but she allowed them to do so anyway.|  | How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? At the time I was upstairs and she was in the living room if she would have come upstairs where I was she would have heard exactly what I was communicating and exspressed to the children they could not use the computer at that time.|  | Bring your completed chart to class for sharing in small groups. After each group member has shared his or her example with other group members, answer the following questions: 1. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? I learned that a person can here what you are saying to a certain degree and not be listening which can cause the wrong action to go forth. 2. What seemed to be the main causes of the misunderstandings? The fact that she was downstairs working and probably listening to the radio was her main focus at the time and not paying attention to what I was saying. There was another was another time I went to the mall for a pair of shoes the manger thought I said I wanted a pair of black shoes when I specifically said brown in this case I was the sender and he was the receiver. The place was very busy and loud that day and was the reason for the misunderstanding. Finally the other day i drove to a local gas station to purchase a carton of smokes it was very busy and the vender being the receiver and I as the sender, thought she heard me say a pack because the place was very busy with patrons. I waited till after it slowed down a bit and explained to her that I wanted a carton of smokes not a pack. She looked puzzled and smiled, gave me what I asked for and said have a nice day.
