Communication Climates
Communication Climates

Every relationship has a different way of interpreting its story depending on who’s talking about it. I have been able to observe one of my good friend’s relationships with her boyfriend over the past two years and was able to see many of their problems in relation to the communication climate that is created by one or the other. Most of the observations I noticed was negative. My friend “Joan” was always on defense and demanding of her boyfriend. Relay negative feedback no matter what he did rather badly or good. When I noticed that she was able to make every comment towards him mean even when she “just playing”. She interrupts when he’s talking mostly because she doesn’t want him to talk at all. When her boyfriend asks her questions she uses ambiguous response like she’s irritated by him asking and just wants to avoid answering. I had talked with her privately about it and suggested for her to improve her behavior by being more positive and giving him positive reinforcement and that maybe he will comply more with less aggravation. It was something she was able to do and I see a great improvement. Then I was reading about the communication climate and the different levels of responses. Now I have seen that the open public display of put downs was connected to a deeper problem in their communication. I spend a lot of time with this particular couple and get to see them have many conversations and though she has restraint form the negative words she’s not aware of the communication climate control that is disrupting their relationship. Joan is more of the dominate partner and controller of the relationship and has more influence on how they handle their problems. All the different ways of displaying disconfirming messages explained in the text book is all the ways she communicates with her boyfriend. I am almost shocked that I have seen every example in one couple. Of course in response to Joan’s way of communication her boyfriend has

Interpersonal conflict happens in every relationship. It is inevitable when two or more people disagree on something. Conflict is a result of a misunderstanding because of a miscommunication. In the movie Hitch (Mordaunt & Tadross, 2005) we can notice an interpersonal conflict between two people due to a lack of communication. Communication is a key role in any relationship, whether platonic or an intimate relationship. When starting a relationship it is primordial to be able to communicate effectively from the beginning in order to avoid any conflict. However “people are usually cautious about what they tell each other and how they say it, and they make a conscious effort to present positive information about themselves and to avoid conflict” (Sole, 2011).…

There are many reasons why relationships fail. The most common reasons are the lack of trust, communication, respect, and honesty. All these combined make a solid foundation for the rest of the relationship structure. It is similar to building a house if there is not a solid foundation the rest of the structure will not be able to hold together. Relationships require all these elements to be successful.…

In a male/female relationship it is said that both of them are doomed to understand each other. Its partially true because being different genders one will always think differently. There will always be arguments in deciding one thing or another. Two examples that show how decisions are being made by both male and female are in “Modern Love” and “Hills like white elephants”. Both genders have difficulties in agreeing with things, but eventually one of them will agree and give up deciding to go with whatever it is their loved one wants. Usually that is when the relationship between a male and female couple is good. Even though there is differences in a relationship, they tend to make things work out because of the…

I can connect with the article Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication. My daughter and I the majority of the time do not communicate well together. I may say something vaguely expecting her to know what I am thinking or trying to say and she will take it the complete opposite and thinks I am dishing out some kind of attitude with her. My lifestyle is so busy I communicate and think in shortcuts and a lot of the time I guess I expect people to know what I mean without fully explaining the answer. In my observation over time, people seem to communicate better with strangers than they do with family members.…

“The story of us” is an excellent movie that portrays the roller-coaster of marriage in a humorous and cleaver way. The film reiterates the key concepts we have learned in our interpersonal communication class, in particular chapters ten and eleven on conflict management and improving communication climates. According to Gibb people feel defensive when they perceive that they are under attack. When defensive responses arise in interpersonal communications, it is the relationship itself that becomes defensive. This is evident in the Jordan’s communication patterns, the majority of exchanges between Ben and Katie are hostile and resentful. Fighting is not an uncommon sight. Ben is spontaneous, romantic and impulsive, with low frustration tolerance and an explosive hair trigger temper. Katie is pragmatic, a compulsive perfectionist with unrealistic expectations, and a high need for control. She takes everything personally and never forgives or forgets a slight. They both blame each other for their disappointments. The pattern is clear. He doesn't meet her standards so she snipes, he explodes and then she accuses him of not listening. She then throws up every mistake he's ever made and every fault he's ever had. This goes on ad nauseam as their romantic obsession with one another continues to get the best of any sense they might have to call it quits. Like moths to a flame, they keep returning for another scorching.…

In reading the article “Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication” I was intrigued by the information that was given, the article touched on some important issues about relationships and how when you are communicating with your spouse, lover, or fiancé how we automatically assume that there is a mutual understanding, or that we automatically no. But more than half of the time you find yourself upset that you couldn’t get your point across or that your counter parts just doesn’t listen, that’s when the statement “that’s why we argue so much”, comes into play. When the truth is that we are just not understanding each other either I am speaking while he’s speaking or he just stop listening altogether until I say something to touch a nerve. I have had several arguments with my fiancé because when we are having a discussion it seems to almost always go to the left. I have tried to explain to him my feelings on this matter that’s been like a thorn in our sides since we began dating, I can’t get him to understand how important it is for my children to see their father and I express a good healthy relationship without the arguing and fighting, but each and every time my ex-husband comes around my fiancé and I always fight because he thinks that my ex-husband wants to rekindle a relationship or have an altered motive. When I try to explain to my fiancé that there’s nothing of the sort I find myself saying all of the wrong things and making all of the wrong points which in the end makes the situation worse. My fiancé and I are really still learning each other and communication seems to be our weakest point although I try be very clear on the points that I’m trying to make it seems as if we are really from two different plants “Women are from Mars” This is…

    Communication Climate

The climate of communication in the workplace is important. Warm, positive environments sets up the day for team work, better work performance and also smooth running operations. If you go into work and everyone is cranky and not talking, the environment is negative and uncomfortable. You can cut the tension with a knife. It is no fun. People snap on one another, or everyone gets out of place and unorganized. It is very important to have a much cooler climate at work. I worked at Cracker Barrel for almost two years. Every day was different. When certain people with bad attitudes were there, it caused everyone else to be in a more negative mood. One person can change the entire team, especially if all they are doing is complaining about things that cannot be helped. We had a lot of people like that. Some days I could ignore it, other days my attitude clashed with hers and it was not pretty, let’s just say. Communication was different every day. The managers were great about accepting feedback and also giving out positive and constructive criticism. There were times, even the managers, were not in a very positive communication climate and it made me definitely feel uncomfortable and I did not want to be working there in those times. When I first started working there, everyone just yelled across the restaurant and it would get a little noise cluttered sometimes, and orders would not be heard, which caused chaos overload. When they decided to have a QA on the cook line and another on the other side of the window, communication was dropped down to only those two people. It was a good idea for a while, but when they assigned a QA who was not very verbal, everything got out of whack. This caused miscommunication with all areas of the store. We ran out of food in backup when we shouldn’t have, overwhelming that area to work faster and feel responsible for high ticket times. The overall communication did not affect my…
