Comcast Corporation: A Case Study
In 2013, the United States broadcast and cable television industry generated revenues of $149 billion. TV subscriptions contributed $104 billion; and advertising contributed the rest. Most households in the U.S. purchase TV subscriptions from cable operators such as Comcast and Time Warner, or satellite companies such as DirectTV, or Dish Network. Consumers also access television content through internet companies such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video. Comcast, DirectTV, Time Warner Cable, and Dish Network accounted for almost two-thirds of the entire industry revenue.

In 2015 they were producing revenue of $64.7 billion and had 136,000 employees. Comcast provides cable television, internet services, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and also content production. There is a variety of cable packages including some with only 20-40 channels to a full digital subscription with 300+ channels. They also provided On Demand service which includes 50,000 programs for about $6 a month and provided a DVR service to record shows to view later.
Comcast was founded in 1963 by Ralph Roberts. He is said to be a great visionary and has an entrepreneurial spirit. In 1990 Ralph’s son Brian Roberts took over the company. Currently, Comcast serves 22.9 million cable customers, 16.7 million high-speed Internet customers, and 8.4 million telephone services customers. In 1963, Ralph J. Roberts founded the company originally branded as American Cable Systems in Tupelo, MS. In 1969 the company was renamed Comcast Corporation. The name blends the words communications and broadcast. In 2005 Comcast started to offer digital voice telephone services. Since the initial telephone service was offered, Comcast has grown into the third largest provider of home telephone service. Comcast and GE brokered an agreement that would give a controlling share and management duties of NBC Universal in 2009. NBC Universal is a worldwide entertainment company and has a diverse portfolio that includes multiple television networks, motion picture companies and amusement parks.
