Chris McCandless was a young man from California who loved to be outdoors and was always very athletic. He always had the desire and ambition to do things on his own. However this was a positive and negative side to his personality because it would cost him his life by wanting to live this way. In school Chris was always a very smart student who had good grades and could have gone to college if he chose to. His parents wanted him to attend college but he felt it wasn’t for him so instead he chose to travel and hitchhike. This caused tension between the McCandless’s and adding gas to the fire, Chris’s father had an affair which angered him even more.…
McCandless the main character “Into The Wild” is a reckless and selfish human being. In the novel it states that “his family had no idea where he was or what had become of him until his remains turned up in Alaska.” He made his parents suffer not knowing where their son was at. Chris McCandless actions was clearly a sign of stupidity almost suicidal. He had chances to survive and turn this around. His first mistake…
Throughout Into the Wild Jon Krakauer seems to identify with Chris McCandless quite a bit,…
When reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer as it documents the journey Chris McCandless took and watching the movie The Grizzly Man as it documents Timothy Treadwell’s journey to document bears I was struck by how similar the two men, McCandless and Treadwell, really were. Yes, there were a great many differences between the two but also by how similar they were. While both men showed how they hated modern society and felt a strong desire to live outside of our society, they both also had very different takes on Alaskan wilderness and how to survive in their journeys. Just as both loved the outdoors, however, the two had very different practices concerning it. Treadwell would return to society every summer to work and prepare for his next outing and Treadwell refused to take a gun with him. In contrast, McCandless spent all of his time outdoors and away from human society unless he absolutely needed to and carried a gun with him into the wilderness.…
When McCandless decided to “live off the land”, he was also deciding to disassociate himself from his parents; more specifically, his father Walter. When Chris discovered his father’s double life, he was “smoldering anger… harboring his resentment, letting bad feelings build and build” (Krakauer 122). His entire life, his father set high…
I think McCandless died in a senseless way because he didn’t have any idea that he would die in the Denali National Park. He thought he was well prepared because he had lived off land for quite some time now in his life and thought he had all the materials needed. He was an intelligent young man and it was always his dream to live off the land in the Denali National Park. He thought he could lie with the few supplies he had, but turns out he couldn’t, and didn’t.…
McCandless early year of his life was abusive and unsettling because his father abused him in many ways that only siblings and he can explain. His father also had another family and impacted McCandless. McCandless could express it. Growing up, his family wanted the best for him. His parents believed that they could buy his respect. McCandless thought other. Overall, Chris McCandless’s childhood wasn’t the best. His journey was the highlight of his life until it came to the end. He was poisoned and suffered for many days with an illness of starvation and was barely able to stand up. During his last days, Chris McCandless writes, “‘I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!’” (Krakauer 199). Chris McCandless finally opened eyes to see what he had in front of him because he realized that his family did care for him and that the people he met along the way gave him happiness, but was too much of a fool to realize. Another most obvious reason for Chris McCandless being a fool for him leaving his life. He left his family, money and career behind to go chase his goal to Alaska. It was awfully nice of him to donate his money to charity, but he lost everything he…
McCandless was very bright and made many good decisions. Chris was an intelligent man, “immediately after graduating with honors, from Emory University in the summer of 1990, McCandless dropped out of sight” (pg.1). This shows Chris’ intelligence and how he wasn't dumb. Graduating with honors isn't something that everyone can easily do. He was a kind man who made many good decisions, “he donated the balance of his bank account to OFAM,” to help starving children (pg.125). Chris didn't waste…
All throughout their lives, Mary and William were faced with difficult hardships that tested their faith in their Puritan beliefs. They each found a way to overcome their hardships by finding peace and understanding through their religion. A hardship that Mary Rowlandson had to face was when she and her children were both kidnapped from their home by the Wampanoag tribe. As a prisoner, she had to deal with starvation and feared for her life. She maintained strong in her faith and tried to find a reason as to why God had done this to her and tried to see if He was still there with her. She knew that God must have still been with her, for He provided her with food and shelter even though it was the worst circumstance. As a traveler aboard the Mayflower, William Bradford was seeking religious freedom and sought someplace where he could practice his religion in peace. On the way over to the New World, his wife passed away. This was a major hardship for Bradford. He found strength in his faith because if he hadn't stayed strong through his beliefs he would have lost control of himself. Death is something that is very tough to cope with and Bradford knew that seeking help in God to cope with his wife's death was the best way for him to stay strong. As many know, Rowlandson and Bradford were both Purist's who faced the worst of hardships. Although these things happened to them they stayed strong in their faith and found a way to make it through everything with God by their…

Who was Chris McCandless? Some say that he is a legend and others say that he was nothing more than a boy who threw away his future. Is the only one to blame for his own death? McCandless was the type of kid who always questioned things; he desired to know more but refused to work for the answers. In elementary school, McCandless was placed in accelerated classes but because he was so stubborn he refused to listen to the teachers and do the extra work. All in hopes that he would convince his teachers he was not smart and he would be taken out of the accelerated classes. McCandless rarely planned or prepared for the future, causing him to be unprepared for his journey into the Alaskan wilderness. He traveled into the wilderness because he wanted to discover what was missing from his normal life. Through his journey he realized that true happiness is when you share experiences with others. Unfortunately he discovered this too late into his journey and when he tried to return back to civilization his route was flooded. He soon ran out of food which inevitably leads to his death.…
