The Causes and the Effects of Texting and Driving
Causes of texting and driving would be if a young teenager heard their cell phone ringing and they automatically assume they needed to answer it. The effect would be they have less time to react, checking a cell phone takes away five seconds of teen’s attention to driving or moving at a stop light. Justifying that reading a text is way safer then actually replying or composing a text message. Texting or reading a text better is much safer at a red stop light instead of driving down the interstate or going down a busy road at a high speed.
Causes of accidents have lately been because of texting in driving or simply checking your email. The effect of reading an email or composing a email to send or even search the web is you constantly have your head down and don’t often look up if you’re searching up a location. Causes of crashes mainly happen because teens or young adults, some even adults are checking their emails or text, maybe even replying to them and searching the web often tend to make people swerve into the other lane and if they don’t look up quick enough they will hit them.
Causes of death have gone up because of texting and driving is caused mainly by texting and driving now. The effect of texting and driving is way worse than if you are simply on the phone. People tend to look down when they’re texting and not paying attention while driving mainly going at a high speed rate you will/could hit someone right there on the spot or seriously injure them. Causes of death have almost dropped from it being because of drugs and alcohol to now texting and driving.
Some more causes of texting and driving can easily be from not caring to simply being a rush to get somewhere. Now a day’s people are always in a hurry to tell someone something or reply to a message or email. People never take their time anymore they believe being in a rush is the way to go. Some kids may feel they need to text and drive to look like a cool kid and have lots of friends and “fit in”. Now a days kids and teens don’t care much while driving on the road, they feel as if they look cool while texting in driving when in reality they are putting not only their life but other peoples life’s in jeopardy of being killed or seriously injured

Texting, statistics prove, is not only rising but creating problems on the nation’s highways. In the United States, texting increased from 9.8 billion messages a month in January of 2009 to 99.4 billion in January of 2010 (Bandelier 28). As quoted in “Time for a Change,” researcher Alan M. Tercero claims, “As many as 70 percent of those messages are being sent by people driving cars” (Automotive Review Council 29). An insurance accident investigator, Barry G. Hulicki, says that drivers using cell phones were involved in 22 percent of the fatal automobile accidents that occurred in 2011. Hulicki also cites law-enforcement and traffic-safety personnel as predicting that this percentage could rise as much as two percent per year…

First of all, distraction is one of the major causes leading to accidents. From the moment of picking up the phone, to read a text, to the moment it is being put back down, there is a loss of sight from the road which could either result in a life threatening accident, or a lucky escape from a life threatening accident. A Nationwide survey has shown that 45 percent of Americans said they've either been hit or nearly hit by a driver on a cell phone (Saletan 2). It is a split second of loss of focus on the road that could cost someone their life. Texting while driving makes people lose vision from the road and makes them forget what is going on around them, and that is what makes it so dangerous. One study showed that “the more tasks you dump on drivers—listening, evaluating, answering questions—the worse they perform. They drift off course, miss cues, overlook hazards, and react slowly. It's the picture of a mind being sucked from one world into another”(Saletan 2). All of these add up to a series of events which can occur to a driver while texting behind the wheel who did not even notice what happened. That is when they suddenly look up and try to react in time while it is actually already too late to react, and they end up in an accident. People do not see the real danger of it until either they themselves experience a life threatening accident while texting and…

Texting while driving is not a good habit, with just moving our eyes from the road to answer a simple message can cause someone life. According to Ian Mulgrew, a journalist author from Canada, many accidents are blamed on distracted driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. There are many laws being established to try to prevent distracted driving from happening; although they can’t completely stop it. No matter what age of the driver is, under no circumstance should they be texting while driving. Texting or using a cell phone while driving is very hazardous to yourself and the people surrounding you. However, the lives of innocent people are being taken every day due to a simple distraction. According to Mulgrew, car crashes are four times more common to take place while the driver is on their mobile device over any other causes. According to Bret Schulte, talking on a cell phone is not as dangerous as texting these days.in addition, while talking on the phone, it is easier to still keep focused on the road in front of the driver. But when they engage in a text message, it’s not possible to look in both directions at once, therefore all of their focus goes straight to the screen of the cell phone. It’s hard for all drivers, especially teenagers, to put down the cell phone and put their hands on the wheel, which results in many car crashes.…

When drivers are busy reading, drafting, or sending a text message they are not fully paying attention to their surroundings. "Texting while driving causes a 400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road "(Thomas, 2009). Anything, at any time could happen and it could easily happen in the few seconds drivers eyes are on their phone instead of the road. Looking down from the road for a second seems harmless but not when driving involves full attention. "46 percent of teens say they text message while driving" (Thomas, 2009). Distracted Driving Essay

The cognitive factors that can cause an accident from talking or texting on a phone are, responding slowly to what’s going on around your car such as pulling over to the side of the road if there is an emergency vehicle behind you, stopping at a stop sign or even a stop light, or slowing down so you don’t crash into the person in front of you. The other factor is visual distraction. The texting or even a phone call falls into this because you are simply taking your eyes off the road because you hear or see the phone ring or receive a message. Some of the physical factors include, not paying attention as to what is going on around you, acting drowsy from not getting enough sleep the night before, missing a stop sign or stoplight, not paying attention to the flow of traffic, or again simply receiving a text or a phone call. The article that I found is about teens who listen to music while driving in the car which causes them to lose their focus while driving.…

Many people, mainly teenagers, text while driving and don’t think to consider the safety of themselves and others. Some teenagers, just like Chelsea in the Dr.Phil’s, film “Texting While Driving”, come into some near tragic experiences because of texting while driving and still don’t consider what they are doing a safety hazard. Chelsea stated that nothing can stop her from texting while driving. I’m sure she is not the only person who feels that way. Many people enjoy the convenience of texting while driving and that’s all they focus on. Most “texters” don’t look into the fact that if you’re giving the your phone attention, you aren’t giving the road your full attention and you are putting yourself and others at risk of endangerment. Texting slows down reaction time just as if you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Studies have been tested in order to prove this, in an article it stated “The new study, which entailed outfitting the cabs of long-haul trucks with video cameras over 18 months, found that when the drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times as great as when they were not texting.” (Richtel 1) When you text you slow down you reaction time and as stated above the likelihood of being is involved in a car accident becomes much greater. In the public service announcement film titled “Cow” directed by Watkins-Hughes three teenage females were also involved in a tragedy because of texting while driving. Watkins-Hughes and the special effects team Zipline Creative used a lot of drama and realistic details such as blood and screaming along with rapid movement. Even death was incorporated into the PSA to get across to the target audience of teens what actually happens in a car accident caused by texting while driving.…
