IBM AP BUSINESS INSIGHT PROGRAM 2008: INDIVIDUAL PROJECT REPORT

REPORT ON LG Telecom, Submitted on April 11, 2008 by:

GTS SPL Leader, Korea

1. Introduction

Korea mobile telecommunications market has seen a rapid growth during last several years.
There were three major corporations that were very successful in driving the market, but now they are having to compete with others. Specially, the competition will be more tough since mobile 3G service started just now. This is a brief report on LG-Telecom which is in 3rd position among the three major players in this market. IBM’s Innovative Services & Solutions can help LG-Telecom get out of his poison and attain second position in the future or gain bigger market share.

2. Client Name: LG Telecom

LG TeleCom Co. Ltd. provides mobile telecommunications products and services primarily in Korea. The company offers wireless Internet service, ez-I, which provides a range of content, email, character/melody downloads, games, stock trading/banking, entertainment, shopping/reservations, and traffic information/location-based service. Further, the company provides mobile telecommunication network technology, including network design, setup, optimization, and operation, as well as consulting for data services related to WAP-based wireless Internet service infrastructure setup, JAVA/JINOS-enabled handset solutions, and multimedia application technology. As of September 30, 2004, it had 6 million subscribers. LG TeleCom was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Seoul

The smallest of Korea's three mobile carriers is the beneficiary of a government policy to support smaller operators. A unit of LG Group, the country's second-largest conglomerate, LG Telecom increased its customers by 26% in 2004, when the government introduced number portability, which allows subscribers to keep their phone number when changing service providers.

LG, the weakest of the three local mobile players, is the only one

The product I chose was created by LG, formerly known as Lucky Goldstar, the new LG G3 smartphone. This is the first ever Quad HD smartphone meaning it was a resolution of 2,560 by 1,440, which is something even the iPhone and Samsung cannot boast about. Not only that, the G3 has a pixel density of 583 ppi, something else that is unheard of from a phone. LG is a company that everyone associates with telephones, televisions, and appliances and has worldwide recognition.…

Let us take an example, Third generation (3G) network was first offered in Japan as a pre-released by NTT Docomo in May 2001 then followed by SK Telecom from South Korea in January 2002 (Dciexpo, 2007). A few years later, Maxis follow this trend and became the first 3G phone network provider in Malaysia in July 2005 (Press Release Maxis, 2005). As we can see here, the global economy trend forces Maxis to improve and provide a better service to its users since 3G network is so well received not only in Japan but in the USA and Europe as well. 3G enable its users to video call, internet on the move, checking emails and so on. This decision was a good one from Maxis because about a year later, Celcom, another Malaysian mobile service provider also launches its 3G network service in mid of July 2006(Telegeography, 2006). This shows that there are strong competition between…
