Through her story of faith, persistence, and confidence, Bethany Hamilton has illustrated to millions how to strive for the seemingly unachievable. At the mere age of thirteen, Hamilton experienced something life changing: having an arm bitten off by a shark while surfing. Surfing had always meant the world to Bethany, in fact, her career as a surfer was primarily initiated because of her parents (Hamilton 7). From the moment Hamilton reaches the board, an inexplicable connection sparks. Bethany said “I’ve tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body (Hamilton 119) .” Although at times there were downsides, being the youngest of three and the only girl had its benefits. She always engaged in similar activities and the outcome was that she learned to be very ambitious and was always driven to be the…

First of all, my name is Sio Tevaga; I am the youngest out of three. I was raised in the island of Samoa which is located about 5000 miles south of Hawaii. As a little kid, I was always competitive in all that I did especially when it came to sports. For example, racing was the one thing that I would say I mastered simply because I would out run all the kids that would race against me. Around the age of nine, that’s when my life started to turn in terms of blessings and trials.…

Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…

My dad started to yell at me as I jumped out the car, and grabbed my pole angrily and walked over to him so he could set it up. As he was setting it up I scanned the lake and beach, only to see that there weren't many people there. Once my dad finished with my pole, he moved to my brother’s pole. I decided to start fishing. I took my pole over to the lake and took my first swing toward the water. I can do this! I thought to myself.…

My life changed when I was introduced to my passion of wakeboarding seven years ago with the help of one of my cousins. I remember it was a very hot, sunny day in August down on the Columbia River near Chelan. When I first started growing up I was very sketchy about the Columbia River since it was very cold and for some reason I was always intimidated to be around that river. At the time, I was very nervous about trying this new experience. With the help of my cousin on the beach I was able to be up riding a wakeboard within minutes. I remember people watching me on the beach and cheering for me when I finally got up on the wakeboard.…

    Just Keep Swimming

My sophomore year was the year I tried to get myself more active, so I joined the swim team. I was one of the fastest newbies on the team that year. We’re almost done with our season, and it’s time for KVAC’s. I was very nervous at KVACs because we weren’t competing against just one team. There were a lot of teams there. I had a 50 yard freestyle individual, and as I was waiting on the block for that bright flash of light and the always too loud whistle, I can remember thinking that I was going to win. Looking at the times of the girls I was going against, I knew it was going to be a close call, but when that light flashed and that whistle blew, I was off. I dove in the freezing cold water and kicked until I came to the surface, sucking in a quick breathe of air I put my face back in the water and continued to swim. Flip turns are always my least favorite part because I can never time myself just right to be able to make it with enough breathe, but I counted my strokes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then I flipped, pushed off the wall with as much strength as I had and glided through the water. I came up for another breathe of air and even though my arms ached and my heart was pounding for me to take a breathe, I knew if I took a breathe I’d falter and fall behind so I kept right on swimming. Kicking my feet as hard as I could and slamming my hands into the board so I could make the timer go off, I saw that I had come in first. 27.29 seconds. A new record for myself! My coach was waiting for me when I got out of the pool and told me I had made it to states. I wasn’t quite sure what it meant, all I knew was I had come in first, made states, and now had another whole week of practice for states. I was the only one in my group of friends that made it to states, so during that week of practice I was friendless and I thought Rob was going to push the selected individuals chosen for states harder than he’d pushed us all year.…

There was a time when I was saved by courage and faith, I could’ve died in that accident, but faith conquered death. The story goes like this, a day after our graduation in elementary, we went to the beach for our farewell party. We considered it as a usual hangout. We laughed, joked around and used other names like the normal things we do in school. We were banned from reminiscing the past because we don’t want to cry again like in our graduation, while my bestfriend was giving her speech. We were there to create another good memory.…
