Through her story of faith, persistence, and confidence, Bethany Hamilton has illustrated to millions how to strive for the seemingly unachievable. At the mere age of thirteen, Hamilton experienced something life changing: having an arm bitten off by a shark while surfing. Surfing had always meant the world to Bethany, in fact, her career as a surfer was primarily initiated because of her parents (Hamilton 7). From the moment Hamilton reaches the board, an inexplicable connection sparks. Bethany said “I’ve tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body (Hamilton 119) .” Although at times there were downsides, being the youngest of three and the only girl had its benefits. She always engaged in similar activities and the outcome was that she learned to be very ambitious and was always driven to be the…

Wilma Rudolph is most well-known for her extreme success in track and field. What is most ground-breaking about Wilma and her success is the fact that she was a woman succeeding in what was considered at that time a “man’s sport.” She broke many records, but most importantly was the first American woman to win three gold medals during the same summer Olympics. Wilma had faced many troubles throughout her life, from illness and disabilities to insecurities and friendship issues. However, the most difficult time in her life was not the obstacles she overcame to reach her success but the point in her life after all of that- the point when she went back to reality. Throughout this paper I will discuss how the bio-social-psycho-spiritual-cultural…

Bethany Hamilton loved to surf and be in the water. She was just a normal teenage girl whose dreams were coming true. Until one day while she was out practicing for a big competition she got bit by a shark and it took her arm off. It was very difficult for her to deal with after she healed. But she never gave up. She was so independent she wanted to do everything on her own without any help. She wanted to surf again. She was told it wasn’t possible but she had faith and hope. All these children and teens from around the world sent her mail and it made her want to prove that just because she lost an arm doesn’t mean she needed to give up. She and her dad practiced everyday trying to build up her strength so she could surf again. They worked on special boards to help her stay up instead of falling right off. It was a very big challenge for her but she finally did it she could finally surf again. This book is so inspirational. It shows you not to give up on your dreams even when the go and gets tough.
