    There are three types of environments in which cells are located which include isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic. In an isotonic environment, the amount of water and solute are the same both inside and outside of the cell. As water drifts into the a cell, the same amount flows out creating a balanced environment both inside and outside of the cell. When there is a high level of water on the outside of the cell and a high amount of solute inside the cell, water will be drawn inside of the cell creating a hypotonic solution. The increase in water inside the cell causes the cell to become engorged and erupt. In a hypertonic environment, water will leave the cell, as the amount of water in the cell is higher than that outside of the cell. As a cell looses water in a hypertonic environment it becomes smaller in size and withers. Isotonic environments are preferred by most microbes for the most advantageous growth, although some live in slightly hypotonic solutions. (Alonzo, 2008)…

    This essay will explore the subject Infection Control and how Healthcare Professionals control and prevent nosocomial or hospital acquired infections (HCAI’s), defined as an “infection whose development is favoured by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff” Oxford Dictionary (2008). Common nosocomial infections include; urinary tract infections (UTI), surgical wound infections, as well as causative agents which are coagulase-negative meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia Coli (E-Coli), Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL’s), Diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V) and Clostridium Difficile (C.Diff) to mention a few. I plan to explore this subject matter to inquire into and evaluate the evidence proposed by published research articles and published literature, alongside that of Government guidelines for the effectiveness and practicability in reducing the frequency of nosocomial infections and nosocomial colonisation and infection within a hospital setting. By evaluating the nursing procedures followed to control and prevent nosocomial infections, I believe that after cautious examination of research can offer Healthcare Professionals, a better understanding of how an action, such as that of the best course of treatment or drug affects and targets a nosocomial infection.     1. Studying bacteria is vital to the production of many biotechnologies, such as food production. The study of bacteria also provides useful insight to medical practices. Lastly, bacteria provides a beneficial method of degrading pollutants. According to the book, Microbiology: a Human Perspective, the authors state that, “Microorganisms have an enormous impact on all living things. We could not survive without them, and they also make our lives far more comfortable” (Nester, Nester, Roberts, & Anderson, 2012, pg. 3). Bacteria facilitate human’s lives and maintain a balance in the ecosystem. The study of bacteria directly assists human’s life through food production. Many of the foods eaten today are either made with bacteria (cheese, yogurt, and buttermilk) or aid certain crops through biological engineering. For example, several crops are spoiled every year due to insect infestation. In the book Microbiology: a Human Perspective, the authors explain that, “Corn, cotton, and potatoes have been engineered to produce a biological insecticide called Bt toxin, which is naturally produced by the bacterium bacillus thuringiensis as it forms endospores” (Nester et al., 2012, pg. 220). These crops were able to protect themselves against insects; thus proving unnecessary food losses. This would not have been possible if researchers had not studied this bacteria.…
