Hello everyone, My name is John Santiesteban and I’m currently a nurse. I am attending this class in order for me to achieve my masters in nursing. My enthusiasm for nursing first took root and flourished after losing my father. My father became very ill and needed medical care. When I saw that my father was starting to become weak and frail, I thought to myself "What access would my father have to good quality health care?" I asked my mother "Where is the nearest hospital?" and my mother replied, "It's about twenty miles away child." It was from that moment on I began to realize a desire to engage in a profession that focused on the area of helping sick people. After losing my father I made the initiative to start a new direction in my life to pursue a career in healthcare. So I decided to become a surgical tech to test my interest. After completing my certification, I was able to do a lot of hands-on work with sick…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

Caring for others has always been a deep passion of mine. As part of my course I have recently attended placement at a local residential home, where I would talk to and assist in caring for the service users. It was at this placement that I discovered the importance at providing support to people who may be feeling confused or distressed, particularly individuals with dementia. As a nurse this is an important skill to have. Initiative is another of these skills, in which I developed during my second placement at a specialist support centre for adults with learning disabilities.…

The importance of maintaining ones health is a common perspective when viewing our aging population. It is said that a person has achieved “good health” when they are generally free from illness, injury, or pain. Yet, when we lack in meeting the criteria for “good health,” doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals are at the first line of defense for the rescue. It is also important that when face with discrepancy, we have good health care team. We need the doctor to diagnose the patient, and the nurse to be with patient to insure progressive recovery. Nurses are special; they are the voice for the patient at times when a patient needs to be heard; they are educators to the patient and the patient’s family; and last, but not least, they serve as the ultimate care giver. As an advocate for patients, I knew a career in nursing would be the profession that would allow me to thrive in an environment with motives of helping others. Nevertheless, I took the route of pursuing a biology degree to get a complete understanding of the human body. After intricate research, it is in my interest to apply my skills in this profession which will allow me to explore my compassion in health care.…
