You would find me to be astute, highly perceptive and sensitive to the needs of others. I am industrious, creative and imaginative l am effective listener. I work on my own initiative, l am punctual and reliable and my friends see me as versatile. I am competent in wide range and various hobbies and past times, and medicines and their uses have always interested me. I want a career that would combine science with health care, with a strong emphasis on biology and direct input in the treatment and care of patients. However Nursing tends to interest me than anything else.

I come from a nursing background, both my parents were doctors and in my home country I was involved in a group known as Father- Mother Network and it dealt with and helped people and victims of AIDS. And I had an invaluable experience during my work from taking courses like, First Aid, Moving and Handling and Health and Safety training. I also played an important role in teaching people about Epilepsy and this required me to work as part of a team with both nurses and doctors. I also have been involved in the Fund Rising of the company, were I took a numerous co-curricular sports activities, long distance

I worked in a residential care home in which I had many responsibilities as a care assistant. Like adult nursing, I was there to care for people suffering from a variety of health conditions and diseases. While working here I learned the importance of working together to ensure the utmost and most efficient level of care for our residents, while appreciating the importance of following the instructions given to us by our senior staff. Many of my residents suffered with dementia and from working with them I discovered I had a natural inclination to help provide reassurance and comfort, through communication, to people that may have become confused and disarrayed. I had to show that I could work effectively and competently under pressure. I learned to prioritise my workload and build my own initiative to establish what needed my attention foremost. I had to fill out care plans at the end of every shift, I had to make sure my writing was eligible and to the point, and making sure I was following the company procedures and policies correctly. Despite the work being hard and tense at times, I found myself investing myself into it and committing as the rewarding feeling I was getting from caring for others made it all…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…

I honestly believe anyone can do and/or overcome anything as long as you put your mind and hard work into it. I love to help other people in any way possible, if that involves putting a grocery cart back for someone, or even letting someone cross the street. I know I was put on this earth to help people, because that is all I can seem to do. I’m not saying I don’t stress and have a few breakdowns because everyone does, but you have to live life to the fullest and just be happy, because things could be a lot worse. I’ve found life goes smoother when you add a smile and live for the day. Now you know a few reasons why I would love to become an…
