How accurate is the film Gladiator. How much fiction is incorporated within the facts.
Gladiator is a wonderful story and won Best Picture in 2000. Even though the movie is so well done it does not mean that the story is historically accurate. The movie includes many historically accurate facts ranging from some of the characters to the society of Rome. However, Gladiator is for pure entertainment, and just like the real gladiator battles, it is for the enjoyment of the viewers. The film added to the cinematic categories such romance and intrigue but at the same time took away from many historical aspects.

Even though the movie is on the whole historically inaccurate there are a few historically accurate details. In Gladiator, the hugeness of the Coliseum is very well and accurately portrayed. The Coliseum is larger then Shea Stadium, and that greatness and grandeur is shown correctly in the film. Also, the movie correctly portrayed the armory of the times. The breastplates were correct and so too were the facemasks and other such battle suits.( http://www.online-shrine.com) The movie shows these true details in order for the viewer to think that the other more amazing parts of the plot are true. Also, by adding the truths it makes sure that the movie will not seem neither phony nor cartoonish.

The reason Gladiator can not be considered historically accurate is because of the glaring errors in the characters and the emotions and actions of the characters. Firstly, Crowe's General Maximus Decimus Meridus is a total fake. He is not a real person nor is he very similar to any one else in history. Maximus is instead a hodgepodge of many other people. The one true person who is totally shown incorrectly is Commodus. Commodus is shown as a grownup that never outgrows his childhood. However, he in fact was not like that at all. In the film Commodus is shown killed is father because his father believed he wasn't fit to rule. In truth Commodus did not kill his. Historians generally agree that, Marcus Aurelius died of the plague in Vienna on March 17, 180 CE

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000), was the first film set in the ancient world produced since the 1960s. Since then, there have been many more films made set in the ancient world. The question is, why was Gladiator able to revive the ancient world genre? After seeing films like Ben-Hur and Spartacus, two of the greatest films ever made set in the ancient world. it is hard not to see the cinematic cues that Gladiator takes from these films. Ben-Hur follows the story of Judah Ben-Hur after he was betrayed by his childhood friend and seeks revenge against the man who wronged. In Gladiator, we have Maximus go on a quest for vengeance after the new emperor has ordered him executed and kills his family. From Ben-Hur we know that this kind of story is not one likely to go our of fashion. Even modern movies that are not set in the ancient world have a story like this.…

When reading about the Roman gladiator games as well as the chariot races and theater events, it can be quite difficult to truly envision what it was like for the participants and the spectators of such events. The participants in such activities were overall viewed as low-class citizens. Gladiators, charioteers and actors in the theater all “had little more status than slaves.” The participants of the games were meant to entertain the spectators, and nothing else. Besides the fact that the participants were seen as low class, they also faced very brutal conditions in the games. The gladiators and charioteers were susceptible to violent, gory deaths. For gladiators, often times their throats were cut and the knives eventually made their way to the gladiator’s hearts. Another possible outcome for gladiators, was being ripped to pieces by various animals. Whether their death came by combat with another gladiator or by animal, it was nothing short of gruesome. This gruesomeness though, was enjoyed by many. Chariot…

Everyone knows or has an idea on what a gladiator is. Many people get their perspectives of a gladiator from mainly get their information from movies and shows. His facts are backed up with a lot of evidence and information he presents is very interesting. Even though it reads like a history book, the book doesn't really get extremely boring and keeps me interested. The movie’s plotline still loosely follows the series of events that actually took place but has changed quite a lot of the facts. Gladiator warps the facts here because Marcus Aurelius supposedly was murdered by Commodus on the eve of this victory but Aurelius in fact passed away before going out to claim another land. Marcus did conquer many tribes and lands as emperor but did not in fact have a legendary general named “Maximus Decimus Meridius”. The events that actually took place in our historical timeline involve Marcus Aurelius passing away but not at the hand of his son Commodus. The official story states that Aurelius died from plague but some suspect that he was in fact murdered by Commodus. According to historical sources, Commodus was in fact a man of ill worth but Aurelius did give Commodus succession to the…

The length of time that Commodus was in power in the film does not reflect reality. He in fact ruled for 12 years after his father’s death (Cavazzi). Much like in the movie, Commodus enjoyed gladiator fights and willingly participated in some of them. However, the people were not impressed with his fighting and started losing support and respect for him. Both in the film and in reality, Commodus would never fight fairly. For example, in “Gladiator”, Commodus stabs Maximus before their fight giving himself an advantage. The real Commodus would fight in Gladiatorial games with the finest weapons, while his opponents would barely be given any weapons (Cavazzi). Instead, he would fight against amputees and inexperienced fighters, making sure that he would always win (Ancient Standard). His death, although not at the hands of a fictional Maxiums, was at the hands of a gladiator, Narcissus, who was chosen to assassinate him by strangling him in his sleep by those closest, such as his Mistress (Heritage). He was viewed as one of the worst emperors of the Roman Empire.…

I looked up some reviews on the movie this weekend and saw that in some way it distorted history. Those people who said that weren’t alive when all of this happened so how would they know what happened or didn’t happen. I don’t know why people would dislike this movie, in my eyes it is one of the best historical movies I have ever seen. Also I was not alive when this happened either but I believe that these actions showed were true.…

When watching the movie Gladiator, one might notice how very similar this story is to the Shakespearean play, Hamlet. In Gladiator the main character seeks vengeance for the loss of his son and wife, as does Hamlet for the loss of his father. The vengeance sought out in Gladiator is a result of treachery involving loved ones as is the vengeance sought out in hamlet. Finally, both Hamlet and Gladiator are examples of dramatic tragedy where the main character ends up dying. Along with these similarities there are also many differences. There are the difference in characters, the difference in when these stories take place, and the difference in the endings. By comparing and contrasting a modern tragedy, Gladiator, with an ancient tragedy, Hamlet, it shows why dramatic tragedy has survived throughout the ages.…

But despite that, we were treated pretty well while we weren’t fighting, we were also paid ridiculous amounts of money and were even allowed to go out in the streets of Rome, mostly supervised though. Once I received an invitation to a very rich Roman household for a party. Deciding to attend, I travelled there alone and unaware of what they wanted from me, well, it was definitely not what I expected. Wanting to know what the main entertainment was, I asked the patron – he only said one word in response – “You,” suddenly, a man was attacking me, I had been thrown a sword, and the next moment he was dead on the ground, lying in a pool of his own blood. For the rest of that night I had a sick feeling in my stomach, not one where I had killed a fellow gladiator by the command of my owner, but because I had killed a free-man of my own accord. It was a few months later that I end up here, in the “great” Flavian Amphitheatre. My heart pounds like a drum as thousands of romans scream in delight as I slay yet another gladiator in these accursed games. I wait for my next opponent, little did I know he would be my last, we fought, and as we did this…

The movie Gladiator was set in Rome in the year 154 AD and was not extremely accurate in terms of its architecture, military, and religion. The inaccuracies do not take away from the movie, but can be a little distracting when it is looked at carefully and re-examined. Architecturally, the movie was off when it came to the buildings and when the buildings were made. The military outfits were not what they actually were in the past. As for the religious aspect of the movie, the references are correct for the time in the movie, but the religious aspect of the movie was not very strong even though the religious belief was great in the time period that the movie was really set.…

Yes he is, not just according to Aristotle, but also to the modern definition. Why wouldn’t he be a hero, he puts his life on the line for others. He is well respected by others, has many admirable qualities, and does not portray an ounce of selfishness. Even when Commodus had made a sly comment about how his troops slaughtered Maximus’s family, Maximus still gave Commodus the respect an emperor deserves. A hero does not have to follow the requirements of Aristotle’s definition to be considered a tragic hero. “Gladiator” was filmed in 1999, versus Aristotle’s definition which was created during the time of 300 B.C. Things change overtime, in the near future the modern definition won’t be as relevant either another new definition will be created. The definition of a tragic hero evolves along with society. As long as society keeps changing as well will the…
