While communicating to his audience, Lincoln always took great care to not only craft a good message, but also make sure that he delivered it well. He spoke to both the minds and hearts of his audience. In a biography titled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin says the following regarding Lincoln’s communicative prowess: “His speaking went to the heart because it came from the heart. Mr. Lincoln’s eloquence…produced conviction in others because of the conviction of the speaker himself” (Goodwin, 2006). The way to achieve effective communication – being real.
